I read the article, and it suprises me that something hasn't already been done about this atrocity.

I think that they should probably be kept open (for their benefit to the country) but greatly slackened. 14/15 hour working days are atrocious, and they get shackled upside-down? Electrocuted? I don't see why these things are necassary. The system need not resort to torture methods to instill/maintain discipline. As well as that, if healthy living standards and an appropriate amount of medical care were introduced, the labour camps wouldn't be such a huge problem. They at least wouldn't get so much heat from the public. After all, these people are only in for minor offences right? I think these camps blow that way out of proportion.

I'd like to see it happen, of course, but it still seems unlikely. I don't see the pressure on the Chinese government being significant enough.

I know, personally I feel that this is against human rights, they forced a severely sick man to work 14/15 hours a day and eventually die. When he did he was only 5 1/2 stone - that's 35kg. Considering that, he was probably underfed too!

I've never even heard of stones as a unit, so...maybe?

While it would be nice (and that's an understatement) for China to abolish the labor camps, I doubt it'll happen. They don't really have a great human rights track record (or freedom of speech track record, or access to information track record, etc. etc.), so I find it hard to believe that they'd suddenly just decide to abolish the system. I'm aware that they've been making some progress in the past years, but this is still something I'd take with a huge grain of salt, and even if they do abolish the camps, they've still got a long way to go. For instance, I'd love to see some answers about the allegations of organ harvesting taking place over there, particularly from the banned system of beliefs of Falun Gong. Oh, and an apology for Tienanmen Square. That was a dick move.
