I've highjacked taken over Blur 4 from vankusss with the support of the contestants. The first round of finals will be decided once we get our wildcard who replaces vankusss on speedrun and highscores! To become a wildcard in either category, simply submit your fastest run on 205668 using NReality. This wildcard position is only offered to players not already in the top 8 for the respective category (you can enter if you've already been eliminated or even if you're brand new to this contest! If you're already in the top 8, then you can relax! A new poll to determine the new round 6 map will be launched once the wildcards are decided. If you have any map suggestions for round 6, please PM me or post on this thread. Finally, if you don't like the wildcard system, you can vote no. Assuming the wildcard round is acceptable, you have until 26 September 2:00pm GMT which gives you most of the weekend depending where you live... it also gives me a chance to determine the round 6 map.

Potential Candidates for Round 6 (AKA round 1 of finals) so far:

myself on the original Blur 4 thread wrote:See.. I wouldn't mind if you weren't competing, van, or if you put this map to a poll and it won. But the fact is, you picked a map that you would do well at, and that bothers me. I believe I've spent more time on this contest than you (constructing images, working out the draws, mapping specifically for this contest etc), and I daresay; care about it more than you as well. Also the fact that three people have stated they don't like this map and you don't care... I'm not surprised people aren't liking this as much as Blur 3, even if it is more competitive. I know you're going to say how dumb and annoying I am, but it's only because it gets to you and deep down, you know I'm right.
Please suggest maps you want here so I can make map selection a democratic affair, as opposed to being a bias selection. Once I have 4 maps I deem worthy of a 'compatible' map, I'll create a poll and we can recommence this competition. All results from 205636 will be disregarded. I have no permission from vankusss to do this since I'm essentially mutineering against him, and he refuses to listen to me - and most importantly: you, the competitor. Any questions, suggestions? Ask me, I won't insult you or tell you to *go read the second post, asshole*. Make your voice heard. Thankyou.

Welcome to Season 4 of BLUR competition. Sadly, I don't have any permission from Hendor to run it, so I'll just hope he won't get angry or something, since it's his concept :).

There are few changes in comparison to BLUR 3 such as reduction of simultaneous competitions, so read the rules, please.

I'm running this because from my point of view, N is dieying, so if you can control your keyboard, JOIN. Also tell your friends, relatives, grandmothers, employees, employers, taxi drivers. Just notify everyone, it will (hopefully) be fun.

Also this might be the next to the last competition in current version of N before 1.5 release, so don't miss the opportunity.

To notify you in advance, I'll be playing, too. Because I'm doing it also for myself, I want to play something with competition. I might have a little advantage, though, I'll know which maps are going to be played like 1 day sooner. If anyone has problem with it, please say it in your registration post, if more than 50% of all contestans don't want me to play, I won't. Or I might authorize someone to choose maps. We will see.

::Different Stuff

I'm using BLUR 3 rules (so THX to Seneschal for his text :) ), but this time there will be only 2 competitions:
  • Speedrun
    Highscore
Speedrun is about as fast completion as you can, in Highscore you need to get the highest score.

Both competitions will be played out on the same map each round.

When joining, you should state whether you intend to do both the speedrun and highscore events, or just one.

:: The Groups

The first stage of this competition will be played in groups of 4; therefore, our total number of players should be a multiple of 4 (although I can rearrange it if this doesn’t work out). Once we have a good number of people to play, groups will be randomly allocated.

:: The Format

In the first round, the first group stage, you will play three maps. Everyone in every group plays the same map at the same time. Each group does not have their own map. This means that speedruns and highscores will be submitted on the same map.

Based on your performance, you will be given points. The fastest player in each group will get most points, while the slowest person will get least.

After playing through the three maps, the player in each group with the most points will advance to the next stage. The four next people with the highest scores will advance as well.

:: The Scoring

1st in group - 4 points
2nd in group - 3 points
3rd in group - 2 points
4th in group - 1 point
To get points, you must submit a demo. If you do not submit a demo, you lose a point. All you need to do to secure yourself at least one point is to submit a demo.

There will be bonus points, too!

The Golden Player - The single player who submits the best score/fastest time in each event will get + 1 point. This player will accumulate 5 points on the round (4 + 1). In the event of a tied first place, all tied players will get the bonus point.

:: Rules

-You will always have a minimum of one week to complete your demo. This should be way more than enough.
-Submit your demos using Nreality. If you don’t have Nreality, why not? you can download it here
-The maps will be chosen by me (or someone else, read up ^^) from NUMA. Please do not post the demo you are submitting on the map's page before the contest is over.
-Do not PM me your demo.
-You can discuss the competition in this thread or in #n-highscores, although do not show other people your innovations or reveal tricks that they may have missed until after that particular map has been finished with.

:: About Nreality

I'll ask someone who's not participating to resubmit all maps used in competition in order to enable a "protectedcontest" feature. This will mean that you will be able to see the frame count/score of other people’s demos, but not the actual demo itself. You will be able to view your own demos throughout the competition. You may submit as many demos as you want, whenever you want within the allotted time period for a round.

To use Nreality (skip the first two steps if you already have Nreality downloaded):

1 - Download the program using the above link and unzip the contents to a folder somewhere on your computer.
2 - Open the program from this folder. If you move the program out of the folder, you will lose some features.
3 – Choose “configure” from the main menu. Make sure you choose the right mode you want to submit your demo in (either speedrun or highscore). If you record a demo in the wrong mode and not realise, you will most likely finish last in your group. Thus, it is very important you record your demo(s) in the right mode.
4 - Click "userlevels" from the main menu.
5 - Enter the map number as given in the NUMA web address.
6 - Press "Load Map" and the program will automatically download the map from NUMA. Neat, huh?
7 - Click on the downloaded map just as in the old userlevels to play it.
8 - Any personal best will be recorded to the right of the map title.
9 - To submit your demo, ctrl-click it. (command-click it for Macs.)

::Misc

Many thanks to Hendor, kkstrong, Seneschal for the rules.

Looking forward to run this :).

Registrations will be closed in a week, the exact time will be specified after i figure out how to synchronize us all around the world :).

Thx to ska for the image!

Alright!

Long story short: van has stopped hosting Blur 4 (which had nothing to do with my elite team of mercenaries I had installed outside his house)
ska wrote:Vankusss, (if you haven't hanged yourself already) I want to say thank you for initiating this contest. I think we can all be thankful to vankusss for at least putting the effort into Blur 4, even if it was a bit rushed. I'm going to take that outburst as a resignation from all aspects of Blur 4, including competing.

Now, I have a proposal which eliminates the problem of me playing my own map and replaces van to maintain a fair draw. Basically, I'm offering a wildcard position which will allow an eliminated contestant in both speedrun and highscore to win their way into the final 8 for the respective sections. However, as I promised, I want to keep the competitors interests at heart, and I want to make sure you guys are down with this decision. The other option I have is to promote the 9th position players to 8th, which would annoyingly require me to reconstruct the draw entirely, and I don't want to waste time with that hassle. HOWEVER! If you feel this is unfair, I'm more than happy to do this, just be warned there would be a small delay. The wildcard round will be on my map and will be a private contest.
Aerobatics 101 by ska :: 205668
The highest ranked player who is not already in the top 8 for the respective category will be entitled to join Blur 4 as a wildcard in the same position as van was for each. I am suggesting 3 days to submit your run for that map from the date I publish the map on numa - let me know if more time is required. This means xaelar, TFK and anyone else could potentially win their way back in.
Yeah.

TFK, the primary reason vankusss was overthrown was because he didn't have the competitors best interests at heart and if it wasn't done his way he didn't care about much else. I plan to run this more effectively and with more input from the competitors at large. Also, as I've already said, I was the one who decided on a method for a draw, did the image work, made a map etc. Now I understand if you still don't want to try out to be a wildcard, especially as it's a winner takes all scenario but just don't make sure you're not competing for the wrong reasons.

I understand you put a lot of work into this, and that was much appreciated by everyone. But so did van and it was his comp. If van gave it up willingly that would be a whole different story, but like, everyone here right now is completely shutting him out because he wasn't running the comp up to your standards.
because he didn't have the competitors best interests at heart
I don't see proof of that in anything he's said. It seemed like he was trying his best to me. Obviously he had a couple slip ups, but I would say he was doing a pretty damn good job considering how long he's been here, that this is his first comp, and he is only human.

Ska. No doubt you're one of the best at running these competitions, but just because you can run it better doesn't make this right. I seriously think this is messed up. If I was van and saw everyone siding against me right now after all the time I'd spent on N and the forums I would be depressed right now.

And van, I really hope you don't leave because of this, because this is stupid.

I was out of Blur so early that I don't really know what happened, so all I can say is fuck E-drama, there is no need for it. Van you finish out the contest as a contestant only, you were on track to win.

I have to say that I mentioned this in IRC back in the day, but let this be a lesson, when planning a contest make sure you have all of your maps picked already, because when you give people the option to choose shit won't go well.

Van I think you ran a good contest you might as well see it out. and Ska you had better have your maps picked for all rounds and I would suggest not letting people vote on them. I know van did this so people wouldn't feel cheated since he was competing as well and he wanted to let people see that he wasn't trying to have an advantage. Personally since this is just a stupid game that only like 20 of us actually play and play well, what is the point of cheating when running a contest for fun. Ska if I win this round for wildcard I am will to let you pick the maps in advance and not tell us until each round starts. This means that I am trusting that you will pick good maps and not play them or develop routes.

On the surface, it may seem like van was trying his best, but ultimately, if you spoke to him much on #highscores, you'd see where I (and the other players) are coming from. Let me be absolutely clear: van has contributed markedly to the highscoring community with with his impressive statistics and runs, there is no doubt about this, however, this alone does not give him the right to be arrogant and discard other players' opinions (and perhaps are more experienced when it comes to N as an entity). What you need to understand is I did this as a last resort. This was literally the last thing I wanted to do, but I believe you owe it to yourselves to have a leader who is organised, patient and willing to put some hard work in and willing to listen and act on your thoughts rather than be obnoxious about them. (I'd cite specific instances of van's irrational behavior, but I don't particularly want to him condemn him further as we're moving past this.)
TRO wrote:I was out of Blur so early that I don't really know what happened, so all I can say is fuck E-drama, there is no need for it. Van you finish out the contest as a contestant only, you were on track to win.

TRO's right, obviously it didn't bode well when he rushed into starting this contest only to not even have the first map organised. I suspect if this wasn't Blur (e.g. it was renamed to something else), or wasn't hosted by a highscorer with the status that van has, I suspect this contest would've failed almost instantaneously, or at the very least, not be very competitive. I know I for one wouldn't have joined, alas, I gave van a chance, and another... and another and another and it has come to this. It's ironic that he calls himself Obama when he is more like Bush.

@ ska : about wildcard.
The highest ranked player who is not already in the top 8 for the respective category will be entitled to join Blur 4 as a wildcard in the same position as van was for each
"The same position as van" ? Why ?
I mean, i'd prefer be seeded 1st... The highest ranked should be 8th. And we "shift" the actual rankings. Romaniac deserve to join top 4.

This way :
1st Ben_Schultz_11
2nd eru_bahagon
3rd golfkid
4th romaniac
5th 999_Springs
6th Seifer
7th Hendor

Yeah, I thought about that. The reason I didn't do it was because it would require me completely changing the draw image. But you definitely have a point and I will probably implement this solution regardless that it will take me longer to draw up. Thanks for your suggestion, Eru. Also come back and play van ;)

Yuck I don't like that. I think it sort of gives a disadvantage to whoever's going to be in 5th place after the shift (which is... um...) because he doesn't know whom he has to play until after the wildcard round finishes and he may well end up having to play xaelar or even THE NEW XAELAR (a.k.a. _destiny^). In a situation like this I'd definitely prefer to be seeded 6th/7th rather than 5th. Though maybe that's just me.
