Avatars can change, though. I think this is too dynamic, or has the possibility of becoming too dynamic, to really be a feasible category.

Player of the Year is nice. ReTiles have become as much as popular a style of mapping as Puzzles or Races are, I think it would be important to include them this year. Of course I have some bias but I think the category would be an interesting addition because in some ways the fun factor of a retile is determined by the difference between the original map and the retile map.
We all know Aidiera would win in the retile group.
I sort of agree with you about the avatars, actually. They're so diverse, and they change all the time. We could however look at all of their avatars NOW, so that they don't change them before the judging, and already have some nominees. We'll get the URLS, then have people vote.
Also, Flag, need help?

I will agree with flag in that most avatars are nothing more than a picture next to a name, but you sometimes catch a SPECIAL ONE OF THEM!!! which immediately lets you know which author it is.

Best Unknown Mapper

Hidden Jewel Award, or something?

For somebody who makes great maps but doesn't get too much attention (i.e. not one of the ~20-30 people that consistently get features/nominated for these awards).

I don't know about survivals. There aren't many good ones anymore. I kind of like nijitsu's suggestion, a "best unknown" but I wouldn't know where to begin to start considering what would be "unknown."

I wonder if there could be a "best map title" or "best map description" which would sort of be like the "review of the year" type deal.

All joking aside, here's (most likely) the final categories:
Reviewer
Author
New Mapper
Community Member
Player

Action
Puzzle
Survival(?)
NReality
DDA
Retile(?)
Nart / Tileset
Innovative(?)
Race
NUMACON

Review
Mappack
Highscore
Speedrun
The ones with (?) mean that they'll get dropped if they don't get enough noms. (Enough being at least ten authors.) Also, unless NUMA stabilizes before December 1st, I'd recommend pushing back voting until it's fixed. Just to give people enough time to find noms.

Also, new rule. Should we disallow one person from having multiple spots in one category? I think that would be fairest.

I would like to see more categories from the highscoring section of the forums. I mean, you have 12 mapping categories and 2 highscoring :/ At least put a best mdb/fbf of the year, so people get familiar with Raif's work.

It's just that, the more categories there are, the more work it takes. If more people want them, I'll add them. But no MBDs. I really don't think Raif deserves his own Dronies category, is all. Feel free to nominate him for Community Member though.

He deserves it far more than any mapper I know, and mappers have 123123 categories anyway, so?
MDB's are the best thing in N, and I would trade them for whole numa any time.
But I agree that it's personal, but I would at least like a vote / consideration on it.

You made all this up for some reason. Retiles is not a category.

Hey, it should be. I'd push this as a category even if it meant I wouldn't be allowed a nomination. That's how much I want it recognized.

I second this, but really, does anybody know of at least one of these people? I'm not sure about its feasibility, but I like the idea.

Thing about that is, the Dronies are a yearly thing, so a 'hidden jewel' doesn't sound very practical. It would also be very hard to set guidelines for what is considered 'hidden.' Just because a mapper doesn't get a feature every month but still puts out maps doesn't mean they're 'hidden.' And of course, the whole point of the "Best New Member" category is to introduce new mappers to the community. So 'unknown' or not, they're new.

But that of course leads to a paradox. If we set a date for when the 'new' mapper joins (most likely after 1 Dec 2010), then a person can just delist any older maps and claim to be new. Conversely, if we allow older members who joined before 1 Dec 2010 but became active again, that defeats the purpose of having yearly Dronies.

Maybe it would be best if we just had "Best Author of 2010" and "Up&Coming Author of 2010" categories. Sound fair?

How the fuck is that different from best mapper and best new mapper

Categories are closed, should've been more clear

Course it won't matter most likely
