The first of five maps will be custom maps that have never been played before. It will be a private contest to prevent players from stealing routes.

For rounds 1-4, you will receive 10 points for 0th place, 9 points for 1st place, 8 points for 2nd place, etc., until finally 1 point for 9th. Only players who have properly met the registration requirements will be eligible for points. I will accept late signups; however, you will obviously be held at a disadvantage the longer you wait.
Round 5 will be a map that is custom made by me; it will be for double points. The top-8 players will be seeded according to their total points after round 5 in each category. All players who fail to make the cut will be eliminated. Top 4 players will get a double chance for the qualifying final only (like last time).

A series of head-to-head matches will determine the winner. All top-8 players will be given a flag for easy identification. This can be the same as last time, or a new one if you like.

Hey, maybe you and me can be at the bottom of the lists together! I'm no good at finding routes either. There's also 2 kinds of private contests, although I believe one of the is called 'protected contest' mode. One of them hides scores and demos, while the other one you can see the score but not watch demos. Don't know which is which, so the last half of this comment is completely unhelpful. But, the more you know!

I think a fair compromise is to show the scores but not the demo. Having said that, I think it's fair if players have a rough idea of what to aim for.
I can tell you that the prize for round 1's 0th-getter in each category will be the ability to see the demo data of any run they choose for round 2*.

*The catch is that they can only PM me 3 times per week, and should expect a response within 12 hours or less. This is only applicable for the mode in which you win (i.e. if you are competing within both modes, but you only win in speedrun, you will not be permitted to have access to any highscore demos unless you also win in the highscores category and vice versa.)

Let me know if you guys have any more questions about this or anything else.

edit: just wanted to add that part of the reason I'm going to make this private (aside from giving runs more mystery/secrecy), is that I think it will level the playing field, as Eddy and others have already alluded to.

Okay, honestly, this shocked me that the original contest used NReality, let alone the privatecontest feature. Nreality had only been out a couple of weeks at this point! So, if anything, I'm being faithful to the original competition.

If this can be confirmed, I will be reverting to the original format (protected contest); that is to say, I will be allowing players to see scores, but they will not be able to see demos. I've checked out that protected contest map and can confirm that while I can watch my own demo, I can only see the scores of everyone else. This seems like a fair way to do it to me, so protected contest has my vote.

I'm not entirely convinced by the whole 'winner gets to see a demo' idea however, as I imagine this will just lead to people holding off submitting their runs.

How long are you planning for each round/map to last?

Also, has anyone tried to convince some nv2ers to join? It would be nice to have enough players for a top-16 finals.

Well, I've actually thought of a better idea now... I'm going to forget about that for now...

Re: 16 player finals... feel free to rope in some 2.0 players, but the top-8 final system is confirmed; I don't care if 50 people compete, only the top 8 for each category are making it though to the finals.

Cool. I've decided I'm going to give it two more days before launching round 1. I have already created a highscore map for round 1; this is because I wanted to kick off the contest right, and make sure there is a mix of route possibilities. I think it'd be great if danielr joined, since he still seems to be actively taking speedrun 0ths... It'll also give me a chance to sleep on what kind of speedrun map is needed...

Damn, if it's not too late already, just thrw me in at highscores as well. I was competing back then, so it can't be that unfunny.
Also, I don't think that the "the winner gets to see the demo"-idea is all that good, as jp27ace said.
