King Kong, the original one. I checked, and it was released earlier in the year than Duck Soup.

One of the best old films I've seen is "Roma, città aperta" by Federico Fellini (1945). One of the most well-done scenes in it is of a Nazi raid on an apartment block - they used the key characters in the film but all of the extras were those who lived in that apartment block when the raid happened - that just makes for a stunning realism that you don't find much in modern cinema, definitely not in Hollywood anyway.

Ah, I've seen Caligari too! That was 26 February 1920 (Berlin). Nosferatu being 4 March 1922 (Berlin also).

So yeh, Caligari now being the earliest I can remember.

I just watched "Roundhay Garden Scene", made in 1888, it's the earliest celluloid film.

Nosferatu and Metropolis would be the two oldest on my list I do believe, and both of them are absolutely amazing movies.
