I would definitely recommend Anoice, or really anything involving Takahiro Kido. It's ambient post-rock-ish electronica, and it's amazing stuff.

A Sound Mind - orchestral rock/metal emo cool. no screaming, great voice, good guitars, etc etc.
The Used - fat emos, and i like 'em.
oh, and everything southpaw suggested, especially venetian snares.
ill get more cool stuff soon. listen to playradioplay

Wow, they're pretty good. Definitely some trippy circus stuff.LittleViking wrote:I was expecting something more like Caravan Palace from that description. They're a pretty obscure little French band. I feel the top of the roof come off, kill everybody there as I'm watching all the stars burn out, trying to pretend that I care.
But I didn't, no-one ever does, and I would, no-one ever will
Can't you see it's all flown out of my hands and our clothes are all too often ripped and our teeth are all too often gnashed and it lasts as long as it possibly can but I just don't accept this.
I just don't accept this at all.
Faces sweaty, arms and legs, what a glorious set of stairs we make.
We kill everyone with arrowheads, arrowheads, arrowheads. Thank god that's over.

One semi-obscure band that I've taken a huge liking to recently is Symphony X. This is a great band to check out, especially if you have musical tastes anything like me, spect, KinGAleX, etc. It's sort of heavier than much of what I listen to; I'd categorize it as progressive metal. The band first came up on my Pandora station, and I honestly thought it was just something by Dream Theater that I hadn't yet heard. So, I dug up a bit more of their stuff, and found that, while they have an inherently similar sound, they're amazing in their own right, and hey, who doesn't like Dream Theater's sound, after all? If you're going to check out one album in particular, it simply has to be "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" (1997). Great album; not a bad tune on it, and it showcases the talent of the lead guitarist, Michael Romeo. My favorite song off of it is "Sea of Lies," mostly because of its tonality. Totally into that sound. Well, I think I've said enough...enjoy.
Edit: Also, the little bridge of "Of Sins and Shadows" may be the coolest thing ever.

Well I really like Jack's Mannequins now, thanks Pheidi.
The Postal Service, a good mix of indie, pop, and bit of electronic, you can't go wrong.
I'd recommend the song Such Great Heights, gets a good feel of what the band is about.
And also, The Waking Eyes, which I discovered from iTunes current Single of the Week.
A new Beatle-esque band, check em out.
Wolves at the Door, is free on iTunes atm. I suggest you get it. Really, I do.

Symphony X is technically a blend of Power Metal and Progressive Metal. The progressive elements are also more evident in their earlier releases, where their newest ones, The Odyssey and Paradise Lost are more straight forward Power Metal.Jiggerjaw wrote:One semi-obscure band that I've taken a huge liking to recently is Symphony X. Jack's Mannequin has become quite the rage with my old high school female friends. I despise them, but im not really a fan of piano rock.pheidippides wrote:If you like music of the general Coldplay-ish variety, check out Jack's Mannequin on Youtube. again, This Mortal Coil, specially their "Filigree & Shadow" album.
Nouvelle Vague <- they're really awesome to relax, to the sound of some well-known lyrics.
Tom Waits <- just listen, and (try to) yell/sing with him.
Calexico <- mexican/something style music, with bits of jazz sometimes. The band that introduced me to real music.
A St. Mount Zion <- I really don't have any music from them. But I listened to one of their songs one day. Yep, they're great.
And now, I'll show a in-development band. A portuguese band called the Iconoclasts.Listen here
Oh, and never forgetting Sigur Rós or some good old Doors and Grant Green(Guitar Jazz).

I've recently discovered a band named Nevermore. It's hard to describe what genre they are, but they have elements of power metal, thrash metal and progressive metal. They also have some death metal traits (low tuned riffing and such.) I'd classify them as progressive metal, though.
Just listen to some tracks like "The River Dragon Has Come", "Narcosynthesis", "Engine of Hate" or, hell, listen to the entire album 'Dead Heart In A Dead World' (2000). There's another album called 'Dreaming Neon Black' (1999), a concept album. It's about Warrel Dane's (lead vocalist) girlfriend who joined an extremist cult and he never saw her again. He had nightmares about her, and the cult eventually kills her. However, unlike their later work, the album is more emotional and contains ballad-type songs. You can actually feel Warrel's pain in the album.
As of now, they're recording a new album (I think) but their latest work is 'This Godless Endeavor' (2005). Check it out.
Very unique band, in my opinion.
Also, props to Jiggerjaw for mentioning Symphony X.

LV and I were talking one night about if you could only listen to three albums for the rest of your life, which would they be? For me:
The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky
In the Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused
But obscure stuff? I specialize in Canadian stuff: Karkwa, Shadrach Kabango and MSTRKRFT.

Handofgod - Your music tastes are absolutely brilliant. You should recommend some more, as well as tell me something about a girl a gun a ghost. I've not heard of them, but I am a huge fan of all your other listed bands. (I saw High on Fire, Baroness, and Opeth when they came to St. Louis a few months back, I'm sure you woulda loved it.)
I will also throw in some recommendations, I'll keep them on the funkier side so to leave a greater chance of someone actually finding someone new to listen to:
Dillinger Escape Plan
36 Crazyfists
Cursive
Galactic (Jazz/funk/rap/jam band, seriously incredible stuff)
I will also endorse the previous suggestions of High on Fire, Baroness, Textures, and Underoath.

Back up there on the Malajube thing, they are first of all amazing, and second of all, incredibly awesome guys. I got to hang out with them when my Norweigian friend took me to a show.
These guys aren't too obscure, but more people should listen to The Shins. Their latest is their weakest album, probably, and it is still one of my top twenty all-time. Deliciously mellow indie-pop-rock.
And, yeah, you guys all know The Arcade Fire, but I'm continuing the trend of supporting bands I've met. My parents live two minutes away from their Quebec jam studio.
And Margot & the Nuclear So and So's are interesting.

A YouTube video on their song "Song in My Head"
The video's really something else, very intriguing.

The Postal Service, a good mix of indie, pop, and bit of electronic, you can't go wrong.
I'd recommend the song Such Great Heights, gets a good feel of what the band is about.

Such Great Heights sounds amazing when it is covered by Iron and Wine for Garden State. I like it more than the original.
