if 200$ is all you can spend then a cube is the best option.

Believe me, get the cube. My guitar teachers use it, so do my friends. I've tried it, and it's a great amp, even if you could spend $300, I'd get the cube. There's nothing wrong with it, and I don't think it -has- to be battery powered, you can use a power cord if you want.

You can get a marshall amp for bout $500 here.
but 250? You're gonna have some real trouble unless you get the cube thing, and i would definitely reccomend a marshall over it.

The best advice ever given to me is this: go into a store and try them out for yourself. Other people can't tell you what suits you.
PS: Marshall amps sound like sloppy farts.

bleh marshall amps get good once you get above the 1 grand mark, but then again most amps are by then. i played on a 4 grand marshall in the store, damn it was a nice amp. but no way am i ever spending that much money on some wiring and a magnet. :P
i dont really like marshall amps though, as a rule. prestige, pleh.
if you like playing with distortion, a cube will do you great, theyre nice amps. if you like playing clean, cubes arent bad for it, but youd probably be able to find better. go into your nearest music shop, play around on everything you can in that price range. its free, and good practice :P
take your guitar in too, as it could sound different with a shop guitar.
hope you find what youre looking for ^_______^

I currently use a Roland Micro Cube, which is a decent amp if you don't need that much power, and don't want to spend a lot.

If this was 18 years ago I'd tell you to get a Fender Super Reverb :)
