I am concerned that this manner of competition will levy an unfair bias against my lesser known but still awesome characters.

The fact that the characters are lesser known is a bias in of itself, one that is always going to be there. If a character is well known, naturally it will get more votes than a relatively unknown character. There's no way around that.
