This will need a skin change soon, but the new forums are kind of cool.

I approve wholeheartedly of these new forums. Basically, it's the same. Except better. Because it's less cluttered and all that. I think there are going to be a lot of complaints about the new forum motif, and perhaps the move in general, but I think most of the community will appreciate the change, and it certainly deals with the problem of having four thousand inactive members, just sitting around. I'm overall pretty happy. Sort of looking forward to the allotment of moderator positions, so we can see who we're going to be answering to when it's all said and done. But, on the whole, LV, Dave, Blizz: you get Jiggerjaw's seal of approval.

It's going to take me a long time for me to get used to the new forum layout. Not to mention the colour scheme. D:
Still, I've been waiting for this move for a long time, ever since they said it was going to be moved to M&R's server after robotology. Great that it's finally happened.

Seriously? I think the color scheme was one of the best changes. The colors on the old forums were really pretty boring. It was fine that way, because we didn't need a lot of flair. It had an air of half-professionalism that drew intelligent individuals. But, when you get right down to it, it looks just damn nice. I also like the buttons and the heading bar things. They fit together quite well with the color scheme, and in general look a bit nicer than the old ones did. One small complaint is that the quote and edit post buttons are at the bottom of the posts now, so when I was trying to quote you, I first quoted myself...I would get used to it, no doubt, but having it all the way below the signature and post date/time makes it less intuitive.Kwiftee wrote:It's going to take me a long time for me to get used to the new forum layout. Edit: I was looking at it all wrong. But, I still think the quote, edit and delete post buttons would be better on top, like they used to be. But, of course, as with 99% of the complaints you'll get, it's a minor thing and you have larger issues to tend to with starting the forums over, so I don't expect it to change, at least not quickly.

I'm pretty sure that's inherent in the software they're running here; if I'm guessing right, it's IPB, whereas before we were on phpBB.Jiggerjaw wrote: One small complaint is that the quote and edit post buttons are at the bottom of the posts now, so when I was trying to quote you, I first quoted myself...I would get used to it, no doubt, but having it all the way below the signature and post date/time makes it less intuitive.

All that positioning can be changed with styling. In the default phpBB theme (you got those the wrong way around), the buttons are at the top.scythe33 wrote:I'm pretty sure that's inherent in the software they're running here; if I'm guessing right, it's IPB, whereas before we were on phpBB.Jiggerjaw wrote: One small complaint is that the quote and edit post buttons are at the bottom of the posts now, so when I was trying to quote you, I first quoted myself...I would get used to it, no doubt, but having it all the way below the signature and post date/time makes it less intuitive.

Aye, I'm testing this post to see how my signature comes up. Not sure if I can still see it when I am editing. Glasses of Birch Beer all around.
EDIT: Ah, okay. Definitely working now... just gotta fix a few things and I'm set.

I dunno...I'm fairly certain I'm able to sacrifice a little bit of convenience for my forums looking fantastic. I think the original default theme is the best. This is gonna be fantastic.
I was looking through the skins, and the current one is the best so far, so I'mma stick with it for now. Also, can you do Fast Replies on here?

I'm not used to the themes and the layout of the new forum. I assume we will change the whole forum's looks to that of our Forumer's?

Er, nah. Why would we jump back into that comfort zone? There are alternate skins available in your control panel and new ones being made, yeah, but there's no need to go right back to the layout we just essentially got rid of.

Just two more things that are irking me.
Is there a way of adding links on the main page like the old forum had so we can see what topic was the last posted in for any given forum? I usually don't bother browsing the forum and just click on the most recently posted topic if it interests me, but I can't really do that if I can't see what it is. D:
And secondly, as Yanni said, can we add fast replies?
Apart from these two small things, the new forum is pretty damn awesome.

Once we've ensured our transition has gone smoothly (porting over content, getting members to register), when can start to focus on other things, like adding a 'Fast Reply' function and building the new skin.

I like the looks of this new forum. =]
I don't know whether it can be changed, or whether anyone else agrees with this, but I think that the member names are slightly too small when posts are made. Any else think that?
Edit: changing to Hermes also makes member names slightly bigger, as well as moving the edit/quote buttons.

I actually really don't like this skin. I can't stand dark sites like this.
I was thinking, I might copy the blue skin, and also make sort of an inverted one of it.

Hi
My 0.02:
1) love the new stuff like embedded flash and highlighting for bbcode tags
2) Layout's obviously not final, but I'd prefer a light theme as an option; It's just easier to read
3) Dev Tuts in the old forums was a unique place: devs that weren't really members could come and ask questions and show off stuff, and the whole physics-sim side of metanet I think needs to be kept separate. Also Raigan frequented dev tuts and I don't think that will happen if it's merged with everything else.
4) Agree with kwiftee on the displaying thread names thing
5) therealN as a site name will become increasingly irrelevant as new games (robotology) are released. Why not make it part of metanetsoftware.com?

Hm, okay. I might need some coding help, though.
Also, do you want the new one to be dark, like this one, or can I make it any shade?
