A week ago, just before I went away, I was introduced to the soundtrack of Amélie, which is a French film from 2001.

The music is absolutely amazing - while lots of the songs are more background-y, there are lots that are really enjoyable, and the instrumentation is particularly interesting, too.

Just in case someone wasn't aware, Borealis is musicjesus, I'm carrying his glitchcore baby and you'd better believe it wasn't an immaculate conception.
wolfgang wrote:Brilliant album, an experimental and intelligent blend of punk and jazz. Which might not sound that great on paper, but trust me it works. The bass in particular is brilliant.
Alright, so I got around to listening to Dissertation, Honey by The Plot and it was not all I was hoping for. In no way would I call it a blend of punk and jazz. Yes, there are both punk and jazz tracks on this album but it's like someone took a punk album and jazz album and just shuffled them together like a deck of cards. There's none of the cohesion present in The Shape Of Punk To Come and the tracks are overly short and lacking in musical grooves or lyrical points. The high point for me really was the 30 seconds of female vocals on For Marcus. It was a breath of fresh air in a genre that is generally so masculine and it helped me get through an otherwise pretty ordinary album. Not bad but not overly good.

At least, though, this album got me to go through my punk collection again. No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical by Showbread is such an awesome album.

Enough of this grindcore, thrashtastic bullshit. I'm into the Red Sparowes right now.

Every Red Heart Shines Towards the Red Sun is their best album, and, by that token, the best post-rock soundscape album of all time. We Stood Transfixed in Blank Devotion as Our Leader Spoke to Us, Looking Down On Our Mute Faces With a Great, Raging, and Unseeing Eye. is the best song on the album, check it out.

Sorry but coming off the sacred cow thread, I totally have to argue with you on some points, haha.
The bold comment really implies that the two genres are existing separately from each other on the album, but it isn't the case at all. Maybe I miss represented it from the start, a better description would be punk with elements of jazz, so of course the groove factor isn't really there. I personally love the cohesion and progression of the album, Funeral Procession wedged between One Stab Deserves Another and For Marcus is a great example of pacing.
I agree with you that lyrically they are a little vapid, and that they could benefit from some longer songs.

Anyway, you've intrigued me. I'm going to try and get my hands on The Shape of Punk to Come.

Don't get me wrong, I love Red Sparowes, but I just can't imagine saying that they're the creators of the best post-rock album of all time. Unless soundscape has some obscure meaning that I'm missing, how can you dismiss The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place or Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven?

I respect your opinion and humbly request that you post in this thread again after you've listened to The Shape of Punk to Come. You might have more of an idea of where I'm coming from once you've listened to Tannhäuser / Derivè and The Apollo Programme Was a Hoax.

I don't want to dissuade you from posting other Punk recommendations, either. This forum is sorely lacking in that music genre.

I've been getting into a few songs from the albums of...

Muse (Absolution; Black Holes and Revelations)
Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape; Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace)
Queens of the Stone Age (Songs for the Deaf; Era Vulgaris; Lullabies to Paralyze)

I'm also thinking about listening to The Who after playing some of their songs on Rock Band 2.

Shrug. I used to be into Explosions in the Sky, but even when I was, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Telll the Truth Shall Live Forever was my favourite album. And I don't like Godspeed You! Black Emperor at all, or at least I've never gotten into them.

To be fair, I've only heard bits and pieces of Raise your Skinny Fists, so let me listen to it sometime this week and I'll get back to you.

Ministry of Sound 2009. Best album ever. I <3 Techno.

For those who know it, at the moment I'm digging 'No No No', 'Stomp Yo Shoes', and 'Get Shaky'.

Dan le Sac vs Scoorbius Pip. There's an off chance you've heard the song Thou Shalt Always Kill; if you have then, yeah, those guys.

I have no idea how popular they are, but I've never heard them mentioned by anyone before so I thought I might as well. They've got one album, Angles, and the best song on it is Waiting for the Beat to Kick In... If you're into the underground hiphop scene at all, check them out.

Violent Femmes - Self Titled

Chances are you've all heard Blister in the Sun at some point, but these guys really deserve a closer look. This is a remarkably consistent album. I'm terrible with genre descriptions, so I'll just call it early alternative. The music takes the energy of punk, throws in some country and folk influences to create a cleaner, more groove orientated sound.

Gano's lyrics are raw and honest, and if you've ever felt like a loser in high school, painfully relatable. Themes of rejection, frustration, loneliness and anger flow throughout the album, and when anger bubbles into hate they can prove eerily prescient. I had no idea school shootings were an issue in 1982, but the lyrics of Add it Up take on a whole new impact in the wake of Columbine.

Why can't I get just one fuck?
Why can't I get just one fuck?
Guess its' got something to do with luck,
but I've waited my whole life for just one...

Day after day I get angry and I will say
that the day is in my sight,
take a vow to say good night.

The Red Sparrowes make me question the existence of Pedal steel guitar.

I got TV on the Radio and Deerhunter's latests yesterday.

I think Microcastle is a step-down from Cryptograms. The sound is, as the name states, compacted, and I think it suffers a little bit.

Dear Science is Jesus. Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus. It's like, what would happen if MGMT travelled to the future, and used the future music to please us when they got back. Also, in the future, they learned how to not SUCK live.

I'm totally into Pain of Salvation right now (progressive metal). The main guy (Daniel Gildenlöw) has the most flexible vocals since Mike Patton.

I can't stop listening to PoS' magnum opus:
