I have an amazing idea
How about people actually RATE maps instead of submitting their own and leaving NUMA?
Although a few authors rce all the maps on hotmaps, the majority only rce a few- the ones that are from the most prolific authors and are at the top of the page
Perhaps the problem is not Hot Maps page, but instead the users who abuse the system
Imagine if EVERYONE took 5 minutes to scan through and rce all the maps on hotmaps, how many ratings everyone would get! Almost all maps would be rated, more authors would be appreciated, and maps would have a better shot because a map starting out under a 4 rated map would seen be rated, either a 4 or 5 would boost it to the top. Also, if everyone rced all the maps on the page, then it would negate any advantage a map at the top has.
Howbout we rename this The Stupid "Users" Page

And rework the system that drives so that a map must be well rated before it even appears on the page, then Active Authors and Hot Maps will both be fulfilling their intended function.
Or get rid of Hot Maps and bring back bite-sizing, which also displayed the best recent maps. And with much less emphasis on ratings.
I'm all for keeping featuring.

here, here ganteka. fully agree with you here. people need to stop osting so many AND start rating/ trying out others users maps.

Do you two realise that submitting maps is a contribution to NUMA. It's a gift, a free thing for other people to enjoy. It's not a selfish gesture.im_bad_at_n wrote:here, here ganteka. fully agree with you here. people need to stop osting so many AND start rating/ trying out others users maps.

I fully realize that
But the AMLT's complaint is that maps never get seen, and are wiped off the top of the hot maps page. My idea would solve this problem, as all the maps would get attention and rce-ers
Simple solution, instead of changing and reformatting the site, lets change how we work on the site

If everyone only took 5 minutes to RCE every map on Hot Maps, do you honestly think they've played each map enough to give an accurate rate and feedback? Imo, you should play each individual map for at least 5 minutes before you comment on its quality. I think, instead, that people should look for the maps with no or few comments/rates, and take the time to play those.ganteka wrote:I have an amazing idea

I was underexageratings yes, but my point is that many maps are put out by new users. Quick comment on how to improve from just looking at the thumb will help them out
but my point is, it doesn't take that long, and it seems rare that many people take the time

your right 5 minutes isnt enough. but COME ON ALREADY, how is rating OTHER PEOPLES MAPS SELFISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its more selfless than anything.
Dont get you guys. ganteka is right, people need to stop posting so many and/or actually pay attention to others maps. About 1/3 of my maps gets NO attention and im sure that others have at least this much.

How can anybody with this view be right ever? You can't tell anything from looking at the thumbnail of a map, unless it's nart, in which case, constructive criticism is about as useful as a french translation of "How to learn French".ganteka wrote:Quick comment on how to improve from just looking at the thumb will help them out

You can tell whether the aesthetics of the map are good from the thumbnail at a glance. A nice tileset can boost ratings but it is quite annoying when people just look at the thumbnail and rate (and I've done that before <_<)mintnut wrote:How can anybody with this view be right ever? looking at the thumbnail can tell a lot about the map cuz well... it is the map. Mostly I play the map but often I dont finish the level (it can be tooo hard, too long, etc.). After that, i rate the map based on the format, and the looks, NEVER on my ability etc. I usually look at demos for the "answer" but its annoying when there is none in the comments.

What? You people actually rate based upon the thumbnail?! I give up. It used to be that that kind of behaviour was looked down upon. Numa is falling apart.

> Rating gameplay on the thumbnail sucks, for all the above reasons. It's just bullshitting and not bothering with common courtesy.
> Rating aesthetics on the thumbnail is pointless; you could just click in the thumbnail and within 5 seconds be looking at a bigger version, which would be much easier to judge. Edit: I meant rating aesthetics based on the small thumbnail as opposed to the large one, to clear things up.
So therefore, it's a universal bad imo.

Nice link, mintnut :D
And why would you base the rating on the thumbnail at all, small or full? If you play the map, you're looking at the same thing anyway. Just load it into Ned and play it for just 5 minutes. The last thing I'd want is to get feedback from someone from just the thumbnail; then I might take their advice, when in reality they were completely off.

unless its unplayable, I ALWAYS playtest maps. The aesthetical apeal of the map is IMPORTANT to me when i look at maps. I always playtest maps to get the feel, and the proper experience to rate it properly. Trust me, you will NEVER catch me rating a map that i havnt tested before the rating.
plus i saw several times people like you guys say that you don't even need to play the map to know its bad. For examplean absolutely filled enemy map is often stated poor by you guys without you playtesting it. Dont tell me you never did/do it cuz i know it isn't the truth.

It's the truth for me. I've made a couple maps that have tons of enemies, but it needed them (keep in mind these were my old maps). Because of this, I always give it a try.im_bad_at_n wrote:unless its unplayable, I ALWAYS playtest maps. The aesthetical apeal of the map is IMPORTANT to me when i look at maps. I'd like to emphasize that I said some of the maps could be given advice from a thumb.
Don't tell me, mintnut or gtm, that when you look at a guys first map and there's seven trillion objects, that you can't judge it from its pic?
Edit: nice link mintnut

dont tell me you dont judge a map by its thumbnail. EVERYBODY judges rather they should play it or not BASED on the thumbnail.

Not me. Here's how I judge whether to play or not: first, I play the map that's at the top of the page. Then, I look for authors I recognize on the remainder of the page. If I still have time, then I'll play the rest. The thumbnail has absolutely nothing to do with it.im_bad_at_n wrote:dont tell me you dont judge a map by its thumbnail. I had an idea too like Ganteka:
When you submit a map, play rate and comment (with as constructive advice as possible) on at least 5 maps below yours. If someone spams just do one of theirs and move on (Anonymous Mapper is exception).
This way everyone would have a public rating and good maps by newbies would get attention, however this could be abused by multiaccounters.
Also, I get put off when maps have loads of enemies because my pc is too slow to load it, does this reason stop many people from playing spammy noob maps?

I found one of my favorite authors, Slick265. His maps get almost no ratings or comments. Yet, he is a great mapmaker nonetheless.
How 'bout we make something like "Annual Unknown Authors Week" where people give great unknown mapmakers, like Slick265, the spotlight. This way, people can get more rates and comments.
At least, the ones featured will. :/

When you submit a map, if you then play and rate other maps on the page, yours will be removed faster as more maps are submitted. To compensate, I thought, "So what if there was some kind of points system":
When you rate AND comment a map (so the author of the map knows who rated), the author can choose to give you one point (probably by clicking next to your username). Then a maximum of (about) 12 points could be added to your map in the submission process. For each point on the map, it stays on the Hot Maps page for an extra 5 minutes. The Hot Maps page would be extended to 15 or more maps per page and the new slots reserved for maps with points allocated. What I mean by this is that a map with points, when submitted, goes to the normal place (top of Hot Maps), but when the time comes for it to be pushed onto the next page, instead it goes to the "points slots" still on the front, under the tenth Hot Map.
Tell me what you think about this.
