Way to resurrect a topic.
Meanwhile, I'll say that I have Norton Antivirus Gaming Edition right now, and it works very well without taking up a lot of system resources.

When I used windows I used AVG for antivirus, spybot s & d and ad-aware for spyware. Though from personal experience I found that Kaspersky was always the best, i'm sure that could of changed by now. (steganos was/is a rebranded kaspersky for less money! :D)

I've always wondered whether antivirus companies / microsoft deliberately make their products not as effective as possible to ensure people keep buying them or something.

I use Avast. Though to be honest if you know what you're doing - you probably don't need A/V. Of course if you know what you're doing it may make you a little paranoid... and use A/V. :)

For normal usage, you'll probably be just fine with Vista + Windows Defender. If you're on XP, you'll probably want a third party firewall (such as Comodo, free). The Vista firewall needs some config to actually be bidirectional, but that's fairly easy.
