There are many types of insanity, but I'll start off with a general observation of all "insanity." Basically, insanity means thinking irrationally. A "sane" person will think rationally, but is rational always the better path? Society has always looked down upon "insane" people, because they have always been considered unintelligent. Could theses so-called "nutcases" really be actually smarter than us, but since we are so stuck to the "rational" way of things that we never see the irrational might be better?

Discuss.

Yeah, 'cause you know all of those lunatics who go around mindlessly killing people are totally doing it because those people would otherwise turn into robots and enslave humanity. Hardcore, babe.

Of course insanity is no preferable alternative to rationality. There is a reason society looks down upon lunatics.

An interesting synapse. The silent hand reaches from the fronds, sundering the sky with darkness. Blue triffids weep in the night, and what can we do but acquiesce? For the Three Kings have abdicated, and the dreamscape is eternal no more. Let now the seething crown of ravens perch upon the mighty oxen, for lo, she breathes deeply. #19_139QI!: Error in line 5. Why don't you test this theory? Go get some datura stramonium (legal, as I recall) and tell us how it goes.

If life must be based entirely on rational decisions, what about flipping coins? Or that paradox where the guy is equidistant from two identical meals on a symmetrical plane, and starves because he cannot decide which to take.

Everyone has to be a little irrational at times.

I can agree with your sentiments on some level here, as an offshoot of my everything is subjective ideology, but to be less tangential, here's what Wikipedia says about Insanity: "Traditionally, insanity or madness is the behavior whereby a person flouts societal norms and may become a danger to themselves and others." Flouting societal norms itself doesn't make you insane, it's when this behaviour becomes a danger to you and others that you would be so considered.

I don't think anyone's claiming that 'insane' people are unintelligent. For example, take the humble mad professor in his basement. His insanity doesn't come into question when he's creating new types of glue, but when he starts building machines to destroy the world, he clearly becomes insane. Basically what you've claimed just calls into question what makes one intelligent. I wouldn't necessarily say that an 'insane' person is smarter or less so than a sane person. There would be different criteria for each type of intelligence, for starters, and you'd end up with a taste argument, i.e. Whether or not irrational thought is truly possible and whether or not you value it. I'm sure a (more) objective measure, such as an IQ test, would give little distinction between the two types of people.

'Pologies for my rambling, all. I think we Ps find it harder to write long drawn-out essay type writings when we're not incredibly interested in the subject. I'm just procrastinating.

I'm starting to get a little pissed off at every single pleb throwing their two cents into the ring on this particular news story. Insane people like what? Murderers? Cannibals? Bus-riders? Christians?

"Both the prosecution and the defense argued Li can't be held responsible because he had schizophrenia and believed God wanted him to kill McLean because the young man was evil."

Yeah, Christians. Vince Li worked at a church for six months before the incident. I can't stand it when Christians go around killing people. I can't stand Christians like THAT.

I believe Oscar Wilde once pointed out, "It's always the long-time churchgoers who develop schizophrenia and decapitate men for food."

Seriously? If an irrational book and a hallucination manifested by said book tell you to eat a dude's brain, do it. On the one hand, you'll spend eternity in Hell after living your quiet brainless life. On the other hand, you'll spend eternity in Heaven! Even if God didn't actually want you to eat the brain, he'll forgive you once he figures out The Great Satan had you do it. Besides, you never have to worry about bills or meals, and you'll be able to say, "Ma! I'm that dude who ate that other dude's brain on TV."

And post pics, plz.

By providing a reason why you try to be irrational, you have just failed to be irrational. I hope you now realize that the way you live your life, even if it's irrational, is now ultimately decided by a rational process.

All jokes aside, not only does "rational" in no way whatsoever entail a robotic, emotionless void of a life dedicated to corporate productivity and zero ambition, but it's also just plain impossible to remove rationale from your life because that's how your brain operates and there's no avoiding it. But even if you could, it would be idiotic in the extreme to do so.

Those silly Christians.

Really though, decapitating and consuming miscellaneous people on the bus is not specifically called for in the Bible. For all you people that may not have known. ("Thou shalt not stab and ingest thy fellow citizens.")

It's not specifically called for in the Mad Man's Man-ingest-o, either. But there are passages that might be interpreted that way. Quote:
