The NUMA Pledge

Ported over from the old forums: original topic.

From Aethril:

September 11, 2008: 100th user signs the pledge

Unrated Maps

I, <insert username here>, pledge to rate as many unrated maps as I can, no matter how boring or badly designed they may be.

Right now, most of the maps that aren't bitesized or created by famous authors never get rated. Because of this, hundreds of wonderful maps are overlooked. Not only are people missing out on great maps, it discourages newbie map makers when they spend hours on a map and it doesn't get rated. So please, to make NUMA a better place, do your part by rating unrated maps.
Do we have to play them?
Some have clusters of mines that take up half of the map, etc...
Yes, no matter how horrible a map looks, you can't be sure until you play it.

Some people are talking about hard it is to keep the promise. I never intended this to be "YOU MUST RATE EVERY MAP" sort of thing, I just want people to make an effort to rate more maps than they might otherwise. To be honest, I only rate some of the unrated maps I see, but I do make an effort to.

Oh, by the way, I came up with another idea to encourage voting! Whenever someone rates one of your maps, rate one of theirs. I know this may be impossible for people with popular maps, but its just a cool idea you might want to try.

People who have pledged - 100

From Universezero:

Hey everyone; for those who know this from the old forums, yes, I have ported over. Why? Because I believe it's things like this that help us evolve the numa community. I wish to top Aethril's goal of 100; why not 200? I believe the numa community will be stronger for it.

P.S: If you have pledged, you may have a userbar. ;D

I really don't get this pledge, it's so vaguely worded as to mean nothing whatsoever. Not to mention that we have 100 people so far who've taken this pledge, and the situation does not seem to have changed since before then at all.

Personally, I think it just creates a good vibe around the numa community. It's a good way to help out new mappers too. I remember when I started, it was just that one other member who commented on maps and gave me help that made the difference.

I think that you should check which one of those from the list are present on this forum. I think that there aren't more than 65 pledgers around now.

tbh, isn't commenting more important than rating?
New users can never get better until they are taught how.
Older users complain about how Numa is spammed with newb maps. Howbout we help them get better, so Numa is spammed with good maps.
People write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life

Doing both would be highly encouraged.

I've honestly never heard older members complain about this...I think that by the time you've been here for say, a year and a half, you realise that you don't really care, and you can just search for a specific author...NUMA always will have more n00b maps then high quality maps...the trick is to ignore it.

was this necessary? im really in awe o_O

i've been playing and rating (not nearly as much rating as playing) /noob/ maps and not /noob/ maps for quite a while and giving the most reasonable advice i could. not to help the community, but simply to experience different styles of maps. am i the only one seeing the unique potential and style in beginner's maps? /noobs/ (and Meta_Ing) make the most metanesque maps on NUMA that i've seen, and isnt that the fad?

anyway, because of the above, i'm not taking the pledge. i dont need to commit myself with some vow because i love the game and the variety of styles.

humph

and so it goes, and so it goes, and so will you soon i suppose.

Considering the amount of people who have taken this 'pledge', there are shockingly large number of maps on NUMA that don't receive comments or votes.

I'm not trying to be egotisical here, but I do always make an effort to play and comment maps that look awful, just to give the author some feedback, while I hardly ever see any other users doing the same. Perhaps you guys should hold strong to your pledge?

I don't see the point in you guys rating bad maps. You'll just send them whizzing off the hot maps page, won't you? And that seems to contradict the aims of this pledge.
