Not sure what I can do in the way of music, but probably less than raw sound effects.

Oh, also, i've talked to trezoid about spriting, and got a solid maybe...
Finally, I'd like to also sign up for Foley as well...sounds fun :D

I propose that everyone with (good!) game ideas post them here. Last I heard, there were:
- A story-driven action platformer about a junked robot.
- A Metroid-esque puzzle-platformer where players move through time rather than pick up power-ups to progress.
- A Scorched Earth/Worms type game based on tiny planets, each with its own gravity.
- Simpler is better. A game that's too complicated won't get finished. To quote coder AlliedEnvy, think "simpler than N." Picking a simple game will help us get it out faster and will give everything something to add to their list of accomplishments. (Plus, more people might be up for making a second game if the first one goes smoothly.)
- We don't have to make a platformer. We don't have to make an RPG, we don't have to make Knytt, we don't have to make Cave Story, we don't have to make N. To use an in-the-box term, think outside the box. If your game idea does something different and makes it fun, it'll stand heads above everyone else. If people want platformers and RPGs, they can dust off their SNES.
- Challenge every team. An Asteroids clone will leave the graphics team in the cold, because the graphics are too simple. An RPG or platformer won't be terribly fun to code. If you pick something like an Asteroids game or an RPG, think about how you can change it to best fit every team.

The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace...
Anyway, I guess I could be alot of help with music, I have finale.
And i'm bloody good with it.
So, do we get paid or not?
(guessed answer is no, but i'll sign up later anyway)

@squibbles: I don't think there are a whole lot of level editors for any game more accessible then Ned, do you just want an option in the menu instead of hitting \?

Not likely, no. The game will be offered up as freeware, unless for some reason the team decides otherwise. There may be free t-shirts or something for people who contribute to the end. *shrug* We'll see. In any case, you'll have something solid to put on your resume.Evil_Sire wrote:Do we get paid? heheh sorry.. i think it would be a good idea to agree soon, before anyone gets too worked up about any one idea. we could do this with a poll or whatever.LittleViking wrote:Don't get too ahead of yourself now. Between the forums, the Assembla chat, and the various IRC channels, we've got a few different game ideas floating around now. We need to agree on one and then hammer out its details before anyone proceeds too far.
i like the sound of ideas 1 (robot-platformer) and 3 (planetoid-based scorched earth)
oh, an idea for 3, just btw.
would this work so the planets can be destroyed, and if you cut into the mantle, lava flows forth? what about if the core was damaged severely, the planet exploded into small chunks, with a lot of lava also around.
would the game be 2d or 3d? id prefer 2d for this one, it always seems to work better for scorched earth. i also think that although there should be some very simple weapons, a lot of them should appear very intricate. if this is done with a particle system that allows
- timed explosion of particles
- particles to gib on explosion
- bouncy particles (that explode if they hit too hard, or with a timer
- trails
- more than one type of particle to be emitted from an explosion
- definable animations for everything, be it just with circles, lines and colours (predefnined vectors) or with sprites
just thinking.

However, I think that it would be awesome if we mixed that gameplay with a Metroid-esque action/puzzle fusion platforming. This would make a really great concept, as the lava idea could make some great puzzles, and the enemies thrown in would make it awesomer. How about it?
Also, this should be in 2d.

Thanks to Eiturlyf for sig!

it would be awesome to have large scale things going on, like upwards of 20 enemies at one time, and probably more than just 2 teams. diversity!

I love idea number 3...it would be cool if the planets became moving chunks with seperate gravities once enough damage to the surface is done.

how cool would it be to have weapons that were so hefty the planet got pushed out of orbit when you fired? planetary collisions would be epic as well..Geti wrote:would this work so the planets can be destroyed, and if you cut into the mantle, lava flows forth? what about if the core was damaged severely, the planet exploded into small chunks, with a lot of lava also around.
i feel that if we do go all scorched earth the player should be a small artillery cannon that slowly grows extra facilities and firepower and ingrains itself into the crust of the planet. if any fully "growing" weapons become fully developed, they fall into 2 classes, defense, which always fire independently, or offense, which only fire when the player's cannon fires. if the player leaves a structure that it has been growing, the offensive weapons will fire like defensive weapons, but only at 50% power. the player can then go off and attach itself to another point on the planet, or another world entirely.
ideally, the player could also switch control from their main "unit" to another structure, as player control is usually better than AI control, so if a facility were under attack the player could support it.
ground units? wow that would be a cool game.. it would be an RTS/scorched earth hybrid.
i would like it if you could only see what your units could see, so if it was just you vs your opponent, on 1 planet each you would only see them as your planets rotation allowed, each time resulting in both of you firing as much as you could. you could also try to destroy the opponents planet, or fly over to their planet to place bomb structures, the explosive power of which would increase while you were docked. the beauty of this last thing would be that they couldnt see what was happening, which would be marvelous.
i am mocking up some shots of this.
oh, for it to work well over distances you would also have to be able to move within at least 2 zoom levels.
yay musing!

Imagine option number 3, with a puzzle mode!
sorta like, you have to blast one planet into another to create a chain effect to make them all break so that you have enough platforms to make it across the level :D
Oh, and Lord_Day, I REALLY like that idea. It's Seconded
