Recreating top-rated

Here's my current proposition: At the end of each week, a list of the top 10 rated maps for that week is published. Users can browse through past weeks' top rated lists in much the same way as they can browse past featured maps. In addition, each map permanently gets a 'top10' tag, and a message saying "This map was one of the top 10 rated maps for the week of <date>".
One alternate suggestion that's already been put to me but is, alas, impractical: Having a page that displays maps submitted in the past week, ordered by rating. Apart from practicality, this also has the disadvantage that it doesn't provide any sort of historical view of good maps.
What I'm looking for is suggestions: How would you like to see it organized? Can you improve on my proposal?

Hot Maps sort of sets the "Top-Rated of the Day" and I think bringing back All Time would just encourage sniping again.
That's my proposal and if it can't be done then oh well. But maybe there's a slight chance it can be done.

Maybe for the beginning of the month, we could have a recap of the top rated maps of the month!

Besides, doesn't the ability to see past top10's eliminate the need for month/year lists anyway? Sure, it wouldn't be a top10 of the month/year, but it would still narrow the number of maps for that time period to a manageable selection.

Sounds perfect.
Comic Activity-O-Meter: (how often I'm updating my comic)
NOTE: If I just add a bunch of comics in one day, but plan on going back to normal after that, I probably won't update the status.
+ Dead: Canceled. Done. Maybe you'll get a random comic like once a year, but it's pretty much done.
- Zombie (Dead/Comatose): The comic is probably done regular updates forever, but I'll probably still add something once in a blue moon. It's still POSSIBLE, that I'll raise the status up, but not very likely. Maybe I'll have a comicplosion for like a week, then go back to being dead
+ Comatose: Complete stand-by. No (or very few) updates for some amount of time, but the comic's far from being over
- <AFK> (Comatose/Loitering): Stand-by, but you might possibly count on a few updates once and a while. Again, this is temporary
+ Loitering: Like comatose, but for short amount of times.
- Turtling (Loitering/Semi-Active): Really slooooww updates
+ Semi-Active: One every 2 weeks...ish?
- Quasi-Active (Semi-Active/Active): Averaging about 2 comics every 3 weeks
+ Active: Loosely defined status, but about a weekly update
- Over-Active (Active/Power-leveling): About 2 comics a week
+ Power-leveling: About 3 comics a week. Possible a schedule, possibly not
- Über-Epic (Power-leveling/COMICPLOSION!!): In some cases, this may actually be mean updates more frequently than COMICPLOSION!!, but I'm defining this level as a non-organized comic rush, kind of like a few days after my comic started
+ COMICPLOSION!!: Daily updates for a minimum of 5 days (since the daily updates started. It remains at this status until the 5, 7, whatever days are done)

And yes, this post brings me back to the argument for removing Top-Rated in the first place, in that the very top rated maps had minute differences in the rating (by a few thousandths or less). Creating dynamic top-rated pages would probably bring back a lot of the things that were more or less eliminated when the top-rated and top-authors pages were removed.Pheidippides wrote:Besides, doesn't the ability to see past top10's eliminate the need for month/year lists anyway? So yeah, I'm officially agreeing with everyone else in this thread. That idea sounds perfect.

But for the same reason I didn't like bitesized maps being featured, I don't want to see last month's top ten maps being featured. I already know it's a good map; you don't need to remind me.

After the Top 10 has been published, more people are bound to rate those maps and ratings will change. Therefore, the map that was fifth on the list, say, could actually end up being the seventh highest rated, instead. So I assume that the positions will be fixed then?

It will update itself automaticly, the way it should be.Mae wrote:So I assume that the positions will be fixed then?
Idea is pure, and perfect.
Top10 of the month is a bad idea, people would like to see popular maps often as possible, because, when a map gets rated enough, other day, it drops out of the hot maps page, so it would be stupid to wait until end of the month to see Top10's. Once a week is enough.
Ordered by rating; which would be nice, you don't have to browse through pages to find a good map.Arachnid wrote:Having a page that displays maps submitted in the past week, ordered by rating. On the other hand, it doesn't provides historical view, which would be bad in some cases.
That's a thing that should be worked on. Maybe two views at once, historical view and ordered by rating. You should be able to change these two views, imo.
This is perfect.

That's assuming that maps will receive attention for a whole month, which, in reality, just doesn't happen. Even if maps are /really/ well-liked, they'll find their way off the Hot Maps page within about a week. That, and what if a map quickly built up a very high rating off only a few people and then disappeared off Hot Maps for the remainder of the month? I don't think that would be a map representative of a community favorite for a whole month - but for a week, it's more suitable. Basically, my argument is that maps come and go too quickly to have a monthly top-rated. A weekly selection is ideal, considering the shelf-life of your average popular map.Life247 wrote:Besides, chances are that you would receive higher quality maps per month on the basis of longevity (that is, they must be good because they lasted a whole month).

and with haveing mutliple rated maps out to see, we sould also update the rateing system to 0.5 - 1 -1.5 - etc. that way people have more of a choice while looking at the 10 maps

NUMA was always going to get these updates. Still, it's a cool project, and who's to know if it won't be valuable to the community? I'm sure users will get involved with it.Gforce wrote:Wait a minute... part of the reason I started AltArc was because of the technical limitations NUMA acquired, especially sorting by rating. Do they actually, or are you just not getting the ratings you want? Because you are the only person I know who still complains about being regurlarly snipered. Do you think maybe you could install a feature where it shows who rated what? This could help greatly pick out the snipers.
