Revised Idea:
Image

(The Map ID is in blue: http://www.nmaps.net/145550)

It'd be nice to have a button that copies the Map ID for us super 1337 lazy NReality users. It essentially just copies the Map ID to the clipboard, so we can paste into the NReality "load NUMA level" box more efficiently.

It would save us the trouble of manually moving the mouse up to the URL, clicking and dragging from the beginning of the Map ID to the end, and then laboriously moving our hand to the keyboard, pressing Command+C/Ctrl+C, or whatever.

Stunned by the extent of human laziness? Or astonished at how long you've went without this feature?

Is it really that hard to memorize six (6) digits?

That saves the time of having to laboriously move the mouse, and clicking that button.

Yes, but you wouldn't even have to look at the URL. And yes. Yes it is. /sarcasm

I had the same idea, actually, and I wanted to post it on the forum, but then I saw this.
Anyway, if I still have to open the map page, it wouldn't be much of a help. Something what I would like more is this. And about having that button in the map page, get map data would be better that Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C.

The human mind is easily capable of memorizing 7 digits (Discovery did a study on it awhile back). Six should be a no-brainer, especially considering that the first digit is always a 1 for now.

I can remember 15 digits at one time.

I don't care about this, actually.

I would support this idea. I would be useful, and there is no downside to it.

How about also putting it here?

Image

That way, you could copy the map ID without even loading the map's page.

Somewhat responding to lord_day, just because it has no downsides or that it would be useful does not mean that it is necessary. This seems like it is incredibly unnecessary.

To me this is like asking for an autocopy button of the level data. (I still play my maps in userlevels.) It has no downsides and might be useful but is ultimately unnecessary.

What is with this thread, I just wanted to suggest that autocopy button o_O
Anyway, we can't stay on only necessary stuff, we need some cool ones. After all, if you have enough money, you wouldn't want some more?

I think a similar feature would be much better applied to copying the actual map data. Not everyone uses NReality, and copying a URL is pretty fuckin' simple.

I think you meant: "incredibly unnecessary." Which it is. But hey, there's quite a bit of unnecessary stuff on NUMA. Do we really need a graph of the dispersion of our map's ratings? No, but it sure is nice to have.

And it's not completely unnecessary. Let's say you're on a really slow modem. It'd be nice not to have to load the page of each individual map just to copy the Map ID. You'd have all the map IDs just a click of a button (that doesn't load a new web page) away.

Oh, I just remembered something: browsers aren't permitted access to the clipboard by default, for security reasons. That pretty much means this idea can't be implemented, due to technical reasons.

Clicking one of TinyPic's "Links to Share" (for example) sends the link you just clicked on to the clipboard.

You don't have to click on a map to get its ID. If you hover over a map, it shows the URL at the bottom left of the window (the status bar). I'm totally with you on this one though heatwave. dragging my mouse all over creation and pressing all these ridiculous key commands really isn't part of my daily agenda.

I was just going to say that.
And yes, I thought of that TFK. I was hoping no one would notice.

Also, TFK, could you add a for/against poll to this thread? (Can mods do that?)

Pff, I can do that. =\

WAITAMINUTE.

I can do this myself with an Applescript!
Lazy Mac users rejoice:

Code: Select all

repeat
display dialog "Navigate to the map you'd like to play in NReality in your browser, then click the button below." buttons {"Cancel", "Copy Map ID"} default button 2 with icon note with title "Map ID Copier"
	tell application "~YOUR FAVORITE BROWSER~"
set theUrl to URL of front document
	end tell

set ASTID to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "/"
set mapID to fourth text item of theUrl
	set the clipboard to mapID
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ASTID
end repeat
Instructions:
Open the application "Script Editor"
Paste the above code
Replace ~YOUR FAVORITE BROWSER~ in the code with the exact name of your primary browser
Press Command+K
Click File > Save As...
Select a save destination (e.g. your desktop)
Select these options:

Image

Voila! Double click on the saved app and you're set.

Why not a button that launches an application (in this case, N.exe/Nreality.exe) and automatically places that digits in or even loads it. EH? :D

Just wanted to point out that at least for Firefox (not sure about IE), if you just double-click on the number in the URL, it'll highlight only the numbers, and then you can copy. So it's not click-drag, it's double-click, which is significantly easier.
