What are your experiences with mind-altering substances, what are your personal thoughts on them/rules, and what do you think should be governing rules for the general population?

"What are your experiences with mind-altering substances"
I had a beer once. It was alright. I'll probably like it more once I'm older.
"what are your personal thoughts on them/rules"
I've never worked in a hospital.
"what do you think should be governing rules for the general population?"
I don't think the legalisation of currently illegal drugs is feasible. A year or two ago, I wouldn't have supported it anyway. But over time i've seen government intervention into areas that I don't believe the government should intervene, and these days I really don't know.

This one time, I had a cigarette. It tasted like the coffee at Denny's.

I think there should be no rules at all. It'd make drug running a lot easier for me.

As a person who has studied addiction medicine for some number of years now, I really have nothing good to say on the topic. Marijuana should probably end up having the same legality as tobacco or perhaps the current state of alcohol. Alcohol, in an ideal state, should be an illegal substance, but all of these ideals are horrendously impractical at best.

You could try googling "personal drug stories"
but most of what you'll find probably won't be funny at all.

Look elsewhere, then. Chatting about use of illegal substances gets a swift hit from the banhammer. Unless it's about alcohol or Coca-Cola or something.McP wrote:Oh come on, i want to hear some funny stories!

I knew this dude who smoked pot for years, and - get this - he ended up becoming schizophrenic and sponging off his already-poor family to support his addiction.McP wrote:Oh come on, i want to hear some funny stories!
Is that sufficiently funny?

In all seriousness, pretty much everything is a mind-altering drug. Coffee, soda, anything with any caffeine in it would be an example. As far as the illegal stuff goes, I think most of it should probably stay illegal, but the case for legalizing pot keeps getting more and more convincing. You could probably legalize that to some extent, mostly because we probably spend too much time and effort hunting that stuff down.

Hmm. 11 posts and we are already off course. (to an extent)
Anyways, how about a tree? You might be think of something else, like thirst (ex.), but when you look at a lone tree you might think of the enviroment. How you can be beneficial to the earth by growing more trees. That tree just altered your mind (in a word-for-word literal sense) and it did so just by your looking at it, no pun intended. The tree is something mind altering. Sure, 'tree' is not technically a drug, but it can be classified as a mind alter thing/substance. Any thing that can derail or redirect your current train of thought can be considered a mind altering substance. A cup of wzter can make your previously stated thirst go away, 'derailing' your train of thoughts about thirst.
What do you think?
EDIT: Just got the member title 'Slice of Wisdom' on this post. Go figure.

No, because you're taking things both too literally and too figuratively. The topic is about substances that directly alter your mind through the release of chemicals. A tree doesn't alter your mind directly, it alters it indirectly by entering your thoughts. It's just a stimulus, it causes no alteration. Water does not affect your mind directly. It simply satisfies your body's need for water, maintaining fluid balance, which causes the signal sent by your brain indicating thirst to go away.BionicCryonic wrote:Hmm. 11 posts and we are already off course. Caffeine, on the other hand, is a mind-altering substance in the sense that it directly stimulates the central nervous system. It doesn't satisfy any biological needs or processes, it just alters the mind. End of story. That's what this topic is about.
And if all this seems a bit too harsh, it's just because I can't take a guy who posts with big, bold, orange text seriously.

Well, I can see how your logic would fit in one way. That obnoxiously-colorsized text is altering my perception of you and increasing my desire to counter everything you say.
Which is to say, doing THIS is making you look like an idiot. To me, anyways. Points for your theory!

What theory did I get points for? Also, get with the times. If you're not posting with cool fonts and color you're not under the banhammer, which is what all the cool people are doing. >_>

Yes. Marijuana isn't physically addictive and it shouldn't have any effect on him becoming schizophrenic. It's either something you're born with or something you inhibit by straining your mental health (such as staying up for 2 or more weeks without sleep).Atilla wrote:I knew this dude who smoked pot for years, and - get this - he ended up becoming schizophrenic and sponging off his already-poor family to support his addiction.McP wrote:Oh come on, i want to hear some funny stories!

Is he taking lithium pills? I've heard that alleviates the symptoms of schizophrenia.

I personally know that Skyline has a problem with such substances at times... It has been real tough for him, but mainly because he was irresponsible and didn't know his own limits.

First of all, that was genuinely hilarious.
Second of all, Bionic Chronic, what is humourous is that we are in a drug thread and you made a post alerting us to your custom title which was something else, something far more relevant in "Baked", which came with 420. In a drug thread. Darche.

Not true. Marijuana is less addictive than most drugs, but it's still possible to become addicted if you're a heavy user. There is also a correlation between long-term marijuana use and mental illness. This is partly due to people attempting to self-medicate and higher rates of mental illness among drug users in general, but it's also believed that long-term pot use does increase the chance of mental illness. Compare with cancer - there's certainly a large genetic component and you can get it even with a healthy lifestyle, but drinking loads of alcohol increases the risk of liver cancer.meadowlark wrote:Yes. In other words marijuana is fairly benign as drugs go, but it's still not perfectly safe.
