My views are pretty similar to what DLB just said. I think that he was an absolute legend that influenced music like no other. I think that all allegations made against him are lies concocted for monetary gain. Yeah, his recent appearance and behaviour over the last few years were a bit strange, but he is still one of the greatest things to ever happen to music.
Very sad.

Also, the allegations of sexual abuse are complete bullshit. They were made by someone looking for money, who drugged his son and pressured him into saying Michael touched his dick. Jackson was a really strange guy, but that's not a crime.

That was only one of them. The other "molested" child was caught months earlier being forced to steal from a JC Penny by his mother. When JC Penny decided to drop the shoplifting charges, she accused them of molesting her and fondling her vadge and tits. wtf.

I was thinking Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Elvis, Hendrix....Sure, Jackson influenced music (and culture), but it's not like he belongs in a echelon above other twentieth century musicians.

Jackson is easily more influential than Berry and Hendrix. Maybe on par with Elvis.

The Beatles were much more important to music than anyone else of that list, though.

Hendrix did little more than to bring funk into rock (Which is seen only in indie circles and "ska" these days) and popularize the Wah. Chuck Berry, on the other hand, kind of invented rock and roll, so I call shenanigans on Dave.

The Beatles are so amazingly revolutionary that Michael couldn't touch them with a four-hundred foot reputation stick. (Incidentally, we all know where he likes to stick his Reputation Stick, and it isn't in Paul McCartney.)

(PS. I don't believe Michael EVER did anything like that to a kid. wtf.)

John Lennon once said that if rock n' roll had another name it would be Chuck Berry.

Aha. I was just reading eganic's post and thought this exact same thing, but it seems as if you posted before me. :/

And about the Beatles - John Lennon is the only one I liked out of the 4.

Hey, it's r_t! Nice.

Anyway, The Who and Queen were not revolutionary on the level of Chuck Berry, Hendrix or the Beatles. This is not a thread to name off your favourite artists and pretend they changed music.

...

Seriously? First of all, this isn't a thread for talking about revolutionary artists at all, but since we're allowed to banter, apparantly.

You've already got my opinion on Hendrix up there.

The Who invented the rock and roll attitude. Think about it. Led Zeppelin were some fey assholes who stole the blues, added a little bit of awesome, and sung about hobbits and shit. Not until The Who came around did people who were both technically amazing (Moon is arguably the greatest drummer of all time, and all four of them come up in discussions about their respective instruments) but also badass. They smashed their instruments. They did drugs like there was no tomorrow. They were banned from several hotels. If the Who weren't a major influence musically or to rock, which they were, then certainly they were an influence personality-wise and to the punk rock ethos.

And if I need to explain to you what Queen did, then you aren't fit to have this discussion.

I'll let Queen slide, but I absolutely have to disagree about Jimi. Not a single guitarist since the '70s hasn't been influenced by Hendrix. The Who invented a style, but not a sound. And if they did invent a sound, it's been copied, to the detriment of music, for a long time. If that's influence, then sure, The Who belong on your list.

I agree that The Beatles, Berry, etc, (maybe Robert Johnson), are all unquestionable. Also Dylan, who hasn't been mentioned. (You knew I'd bring him in eventually.)

You guys really should read Chuck Klosterman's Fargo Rock City. Perfect book riiiight here. And honestly, I think Van Halen could be brought to this discussion as well. Klosterman wrote, "Marc Bolan knew how glam rock was supposed to look, but Eddie Van Halen invented how it was supposed to sound."

I get the feeling that the majority of these other bands that are being mentioned are veering away from Jacksons genre. Aside from the odd bit of rock in his songs, (such as van halen solos and whatever) his music was primarily pop, where as most of these other artists are purely rock. I'd say that they each influenced their genres more specifically. MJ influenced how most popular music today sounds and bands like Zeppelin and Hendrix shaped rock.

We're just trying to emphasize the monumental effect that Michael Jackson had on music. People come up into this thread and say that classic rock had more of an influence on modern music clearly don't own any CD's since Kurt Cobain died, or just don't listen to the radio at all,

That is true. Incidentally, if we're talking overrated bands, wedgie, let's start a Zeppelin discussion. And I agree that we're still on topic, because are we not basically arguing about MJ's place in history? And is this not a "Long Live Michael Jackson" kind of topic?
