We both won regionals last year, and Dave made it to the world circuit, while I got knocked out in nationals during the third round. He took fourth or fifth place, or something like that.

This is somewhat less impressive when you discover that eleven people participate annually.Ampersand wrote:We both won regionals last year, and Dave made it to the world circuit, while I got knocked out in nationals during the third round. He took fourth or fifth place, or something like that.

Jig and I used to chess it up all the time back in high school. Those were the days. We were the most evenly matched motherfuckers this side of the Grand Canyon. I haven't played in a while, though. I consider myself a slightly above average chess player. I'm no Deep Blue.

Heh, actually, the only interesting thing I have to say about my experience with chess is how I routinely beat my best friend at it even though he was far better at it than I was. This was back in early high school, and for some reason the universe decided that I would beat him in any direct competition: I'm pretty bad at billiards and his family owned a pool table, but I kicked his ass repeatedly. Averaged out through my life, I must've played chess less than once per year. He could beat most anyone else he played, certainly including people I couldn't, but I always kicked his ass.
