Okay, first off, to define what an author is, please look at this thread. If you have any problems with the fundamental ideas of "Authors" or the thread, please address them there. Kapiche?

Right, now for the idea. On sites like ForgeHub for Halo3 (NO RANTING ABOUT HALO3 OKAY THX BABES), people with two or more featured maps (yes, there's oddly enough a system for that in Halo3 too :S) have a banner and custom title saying "Premium". In a similar vein, should mappers with three or more features on NUMA have "Author" as a patch? These patches would ideally be in the same format as the moderator patches and what not, except myabe with the Nmaps.net favicon as an icon instead of a planet or person icon. This title would be above regular users but below legacy elite, moderators, spoilsports and whatever else, so mods would not be divested of their titles as a result of getting a feature.

Is this a good idea? It seems like one to me, as being able to pick out critically accalimed authors would be a lot easier, and it could make the site more accessible to everyone. Plus, they'd be damned cool and a sweet incentive for people to really polish their mapping skills.

Another issue is whether this is technically feasible. It'd be nice if the creator of the original patches could post here, or someone who knows who designed them link me to their profile or send a PM.

EH?!

Thanks! I love it too. If it doesn't work out for whatever reason, I'd happily make a sigbar for authors, or alternatively have someone make one for me :3

It would be like reputation system on forums.

Would make people jealous, but it will make people make better maps.

Approved slighty, maybe. Sounds like a good idea.

I think it's a cool idea to have an exclusive mapping league. Not sure if amount of features is the way to do it though.
People write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life

I agree, if this were meant to be a definitive sign of quality, then we'd have to look beyond the realms of features alone. However, these tags are mostly for quick recognition, and discerning whether someoine know's what they're talking about. Or alternatively, if they're under the gaze of the Author statistics.

Did you make the original ones? If not, I don't mind. Just make them pretty much in the same vein. Maybe a bit bigger to fit the favicon in.

Rankings for Authors?

Perhaps you could also have ones for different things as well... Such as MoA or NNN (Hint hint, nudge nudge, say no more, say no more...).

Or... The more features (or however you're counting this), the higher the rank, perhaps?

We've (MOA) already been down this route, and it's been decided that we aren't big enough to warrant them or even a colour. Same presumably for NNN. And it's /wink wink/, nudge nudge...

That would be really hard to do with badges, and tbh features are too subjective to benefit from all but the most vague of criterions.

Yes that makes sense.

I was mulling over this idea in my bedroom last night, and I wonder; what if there were a variety of achievements you could get? For instance, you could have the rank of "Race Master" if you put out five maps with the tag "race" that got 4 or 5 score on average.

Just an idea to diversify the system.

That's actually a brilliant idea!

That can be implemented to people who highscore maps. (kryx, xela, Izzy, TFK, Meta, TRO, Me, and others))

Maybe. I'm not sure how technically feasible it is, but it might be worth a shot.

And chaostar, that's the entire point. Users with 3 features or more deserve to be recognised, preferably in crimson. :D

I think the best way is not features, but dronies. Have a badge for a dronie winner - it makes it more exclusive, admirable, and covers a wide variety of mapping styles.

I totally agree.

On a seperate note, how about you get 3 or so really good mappers, put them in a usergroup. These original three can pick any forum member and add them to the group. They would need 2 of the original's to votes to get in. Eh?

Again, a good idea.

The real idea of this was really to go with the stats thing. In hindsight, it doesn't make much sense making such a fuss over features which may not even resemble quality for the most part.

So I guess we don't have to do this. Feel free to brainstorm ideas here along your lines, though. Just use a wordm other than author if you can :P

The features idea is not really a good idea. Because, my squid for example did not deserve a review, and in this way,
people will have these badges without earning them. The usergroup idea is good.

But when you look at it, it's actually just another useless way of showing off..... But if you guys want to do it, I'm not stopping you :)

Do you honestly expect someone to have three joke features and still be considered an author? The badges are entirely at the admin's discretion; you don't get a place simply by ticking the boxes.
Rule wrote:But when you look at it, it's actually just another useless way of showing off.....
So if someone wanted to verify whether someone knew what they were on about with mapping, knowing they'd been featured many times would be useless, huh?

Are you now actually trying to threaten me? Because if you do, stop it, it's pretty ridiculous.
And it's not like someone would have 3 joke features, it's just not a good idea.
Also, it's not like great authors do not deserve respect, it's just that those badges aren't going to change a thing.
People who deserve respect get it. They don't need a badge to prove they are awesome, they just are. And we know it.
