I think this worths a topic. Chimneying is one of the most important part of the game if you highscore, not a lot of people could chimney good.
The point of this topic is mainly to ask about people how they chimney. I know that Izzy uses up button, andamlt uses space, some uses shift, Meta, Lord Day, and TRO (not sure, I think uses single key) uses double shift. Xaelar and kryx uses single key too, as far as I know.

Me? I could double shift, (but not so fast) and probably I won't bother to improve my doubleshift. I use shift on only chimney maps and normal maps, because some people normally uses shift, but changes to another key when they're going to do an only-chimney map. I use single key, my best so far is 43 (depending on scores on map 121027, which is the map I always use to practise chimney), I know that Meta knows percussion so double shift is easy for him, although, I wonder how Izzy made that run on 121027. I mean, 33? Insane.

Anyway, I know Ska TFK has a video showing himself chimneying, you can view it here. I don't know how you guys chimney, -the look- but I can't do it as ska. My wrist should touch the keyboard, unless I can't do it. I do it with my pointing finger, doing it a lot faster with middle finger but in short bursts so I don't use it. I will upload a video sometime too. I don't use up button because it's so small on my keyboard.

Now, how do you chimney, hmm? Also, you can do general discussion about it.

Edit: Some might think chimneying is not important, I should disagree.
<van> chimneying isn't important part of highscoring
<van> i can' chimney very well
<van> can't
<van> it is important only in few levels
<van> well, what is chimney good?
<van> i think in highscoring you need a lot of things together
Well, van, first of all, you chimney good. Imo. Anyway, I know a lot things is important in highscoring, but this is a big category, it effects the runs, I mean, some maps can't be completed without good chimneying, etc. It's important.

Also look at the TRO's post to see who uses what key. (3rd) I won't bother to edit the whole text.

As you mentioned, I use double shift. I play drums, and have been playing for 5 years, so naturally, the right-left-right-left action comes easy to me.

Well first off.

TRO(me) - single shift but I use two fingers on one shift key and alternate them so it's like double shifting. We call it Trilling.
Meta - double shifts, but he can also trill.
Xela - uses space for jump (I have no idea how he chimneys, but he has gotten pretty good at it lately.)
kryX - double shifts
TFK (who that video is of, not Ska.) uses the up key
Izzy - uses the up key as well.

As for the necessity for chimneying in highscoring, it certainly doesn't hurt, but it is less important that you think. I am pretty sure that is was Lim who can be qouted saying "I can't chimney for shit, people can chimney with their toes faster than me." and he was one of the best highscorers ever. probably second only to xela.

EDIT: found the actual quote.
Mr_lim wrote:People can chimney faster than me with their feet.
EDIT2: Tried what 999 did:
Single shifting - 41
Trilling - 37 (my normal chimney.)
Up arrow - 43
double shifting - 47
space bar - 39 (there may be something to this one.)

I just tried 121027 with different styles of chimneying and this is what I got as my best:

Single shift, right hand - 45 frames
Trilling - 53
Single shift, left hand - 54
Double shift - 57
Bum (!!) - 59
Nose - 66
Foot - 70

Hmm. My results. -Tested on 121027-
  • Single key, shift, right hand: 46-45-44-46
  • Single key, shift, left hand: 60-53-62 Note: Slow.
  • Single key, space, right hand: 45-44-44-46
  • Single key, space, left hand: 54-59-56-54
  • Double shift: 65-68-60-59
  • Up button, right hand: 48-47-50-49 Note: Not really fast, not really slow.
  • Up button, left hand: 63-62-69-66
  • Trilling: 56-53-50-49
Best with shift, right hand, pointing finger, I do it good with middle finger too.

I'm one of the spacebar users. I'm not the best at chimneying, mostly because my spacebar can only take so much abuse. I'll get a video of me chimneying soon.

And I am a great FBF-er.

From Inspired's map:

Code: Select all

49:4475904|79692992|71614468|4505668|79692876|4475904|4505676|0

If the map is only a chimney, or is mainly just a chimney, I'll use space. Otherwise I'll use a single ctrl.

I haven't played the map Inspired posted up, but I get between 42 and 47 frames on my first try of most pure chimney maps.

I do agree with Tunco that chimneying is not the most important of skills to have as a highscorer, but that it also doesn't hurt to have it either. I have a hard time getting under 50 frames on 121027, and am not even in the top 20 according to NReality. However, I am still just outside of the top 10 according to number of highscores. So obviously, chimneying isn't the be all and end all for highscores. As for what I use to chimney, I use just the z key with my left index finger, as I do for all other jumping.

That being said, there are situations where having good chimney skills means that you can absolutely blow away somebody who doesn't. One example is if you only have a single tile height to chimney through. I can only get one jump off in there consistently, whereas somebody like TRO who can chimney much better than me can consistently get two jumps, and maybe 3 in the same space. Another situation is getting the triple jumps off of 4 tiles. Although its not a chimney, the same idea of hitting jump in super-quick succession applies. You can get probably 1.5 times the height with a triple off a 4-tile than you can without.

Well, I thought I'd have a go at it too with Inspired's map. Now, I usually use Xaelar's approach of the "Vibrate the hand", but I do it on shift. So here's what I got.

Single shift, right hand

Single shift, left hand

Trilling

Double shift

I like to think I'm quite good at chimneying, but it's clear here that my shitty keyboard seems to have something to do with it. My keys don't fully spring back after I release them, at least, not quickly, so while I cannot trill, (and I just suck at timing the double shift), I can one handed chimney fairly quickly...lesser movement of the keys I suppose.

But this is all speculative. I really have no idea. :/

single key, shift, right: 44
single key, shift, left: 49
single key, space right: 49
single key, space, left: 45
double shift: 58
up button, right: 43
up button, left: 48
trilling: could not finish, shift buttons are too small :'(

I maybe change to single key right, that's the only option I could go along with.
What really bothers me, is that you have t space to start a level. That's why I use space as jump button basically.
