I think the lag is just caused by a slow harddrive. Like Eddy said, it has to write your new PBs to the .sol file, so if your harddrive is failing/slow that takes a long time. Not much to do about it.

I think until macro retries with a blank sol, we should factor in level transition lag into his final time. I think he lost a good 10-15 seconds to lag.

Without an accurate way to time the lag I dunno how we'd factor it in to his time :/ The speedrun.com leaderboards are RTA (real time attack) which is usually meant to include all time in the game, except load times that can be accurately accounted for. That said I'm sure he can improve the time with a blank .sol so it probably won't matter for long.

I think it would be really cool if we had a tool that actually counted the in-game frames, but I don't know of a way to do that which accounts for deaths.

NReality has a built in frame counter in the top-left corner; you could just use that to add up all the frames. No gold calculations required (as it's a speedrun). If the player dies, just take a still frame of the frame count on that death and add it to the tally.This would completely eliminate any discrepancies to do with lag/how fast you can mash the space bar.

This is tricky, if you don't count the time inbetween the runs, you can just exploit this rule and take a break, or even practise the level in a different computer, which would be technically valid. I know I know, this is very unlikely, but the reason RTA rules are applied is because you need to have exploitproof rules in official comps, and RTA is the most secure method to ensure so.

Instead of playing on a new .sol where every run would be a PB, you could just play in highscore mode. That would remove the chance to PB in a run*. Obviously it would suck if you did PB or even worse take the 0th in the speedrun, but that is probably unlikely.

*Except for the few runs like 2-3 and 5-2 where the HS and SR routes are the same.

Curious to see how it will go! I've been thinking about doing one for a while, but I need to actually learn the routes for the hard levels first.

Edit: Just did some runs vs Macro's splits. I can save about 15 seconds each on ep06 and ep09...it's just a matter of doing that without losing time everywhere else :/

good luck with that - you're obviously much more well-prepared than i am, and it would be fun to watch as long as i get my fucking adobe flash player working again. try to not get too frustrated with the 80's column. i secretly hate you because i was hoping to hold the record for full game speedrun forever, but no hard feelings

i'm in the same timezone as dw40 is so i'll be able to watch the whole thing. but with preparation i think he would easily take 3 hours off, since when i did it my goal was to beat it within a day, not necessarily a speedrun. also i spent like an hour watching live stand-up comedy, 15 minutes in total writing up the log as i went along, and about 20-30(?) minutes eating, all of which are totally unnecessary for a speedrun

Do you all think that should be required for the category, or should you be allowed to start with the hard columns to get them out of the way first, since the game technically doesn't care which one you start on?

Thanks man. With a crazy amount of practice, maybe it can go as low as 5 hours. I don't think it should matter which order you do the columns in either.

If you want my opinion, I think it can be taken under 4 hours, based on Analu's column speedrun scores, which if they are legit and I added them properly, sum barely over 4 hours, and I don't think he really put a lot of effort into the later columns, nor practise on beforehand, so I'd be surprised if those scores are tight, I mean even his Column 00 run is 24 minutes, which one can get with barely any practise on beforehand (and we can expect this column to be the cleanest on his list).

So beating those times barely would already yield sub-4h. Then again, I haven't speedrunned any column so I'm not sure how fast those scores are, since there's no comparison nor video. But based on Column 00, that's the feeling I get.

I also remember being on IRC a while ago speedrunning Column 20 with some people, van and I beat it in 20 minutes iirc, which is 10 minutes faster than Analu, and we hadn't practised at all, it was improvised. So that leads me to think Analu didn't really practise on beforehand either, because lets be honest, who is gods name would practise all 500 levels on beforehand? xD

Of course, I could be wrong and those column scores could be super tight :P Also, even if the scores aren't tight, it might be tough to stay focused for such a long time, and tiredness is certainly a factor.

Analu's column 80 in 30 minutes seems pretty impressive to me. Other than that the times seem fairly loose...I beat column 20 in ~17 minutes back when I tried a few runs of it, and his column 00 is obviously improvable. Once I learn routes for the harder levels and get decent at them I'll definitely be trying an all columns run. I agree that ~4 hours seems possible.

Just managed an 18:23 on column 00. Not a perfect run, since I had one small death on 08-1, and my movement wasn't great in a lot of places. Overall though I'm happy with it, and will probably take a break from column 00 even if someone beats me :p

I'm not even uploading the video because I'll be going for sub-18 soon, was going to do it today, but I lost my focus and I'm dying too much now, so I'll try again tomorrow with a fresh mind. I think I can pull it down to 17:30 if I manage no mistakes, I mean, based on the main time wastes I had in this run and the previous one.

Grats, that confirms my suspicion that I won't be able to compete with high scorers in the long run. Oh well, I'm happy to have gotten the time I did, and maybe I'll try some other columns.

Please commentate, Eddy. Also, Yeti, don't be disparaged; you pulled off a really solid run, especially for someone who isn't really a part of the traditional highscoring scene...

edit: Eddy, you don't need to commentate, especially if you think it'll negatively affect your performance. Just make sure you record it ;)
If you don't feel like doing a live commentary, perhaps you can dub over a commentary over the top in post production. Perhaps talking about backup plans and what you were happy about/not so happy about etc.
