Anyone else here a keen chess player, whether it be competitively or just for fun? I don't play competitively (well, not properly) myself, although a couple of my friends do.

I play the game on the odd occassion, but not that much. I've played enough to know about en passent, but that's about it.

Although, when I was younger I used to play Chessmaster 7000 and Lego Chess a lot. I loved the fact that I could beat Bo-bo the Chimp at chess.

I really can't concentrate that well to have a good game of chess. That game drags on for ages.

I used to play it online, but I reinstalled my Windows and I don't know the site anymore : /
Well, I'd call myself average. Maybe we should create a Metanet tournament?

Chess seems to be good at showing a person's nature / inner workings. I've played games against GTM, and often it's GTM that wins because I'm quite hasty, don't observe the table, and put myself at a disadvantage. Often become focused on one thing and losing track of everything else.

As for a tourney, sounds good. Any freeware that it can be done on?

My dad was actually the president of the chess association in my state for a while, he's been involved in professional chess for years, so my family's pretty big on the game. we've won at least a couple dozen trophies and ribbons over the years.

Its not something i get to brag about too often.

I'm awful at planning ahead. I much prefer games that require on the spot reactions and quick-fire tactics. Not to say I don't enjoy a game of Chess. I'd be up for you guys putting me in my place if you get this thing up and running!

Wow, this developed pretty quickly. I'd be interested in taking part in a tournament, but I wouldn't want to run it.

My only problem would be if we were going to do a tournament, on what medium would we do it?

I can take a look for stuff to do a tourny over the internet. Worst case scenario, we could do it via irc. Tedious, but certainly possible....

I've been playing chess for about 8 years now. So far, my worst chess enemy is that horrible thing called THE CHESS CLOCK. It is SO intimidating. Tick! Tock! Tick! Tock! Worse are the digital ones which count down every second in big numbers on the screen. ARGH. They distract me from my thoughts. I have probably lost a game on time about 50+ times, and only once have I ever won a game on time.

Without a clock, though, is a different matter. I can work out quite a lot of possibilities, and I very often win games that way. I once managed a draw by perpetual check against some Elo 2000+ person (without a clock, obviously).

I don't play chess outside of school. I'm too lazy...
Achievements:

Completed N and NReality.
106 N v1.4 highscores.
I used to maintain 1000 NReality Level Top20 Highscores - Ranked 0th
Former Owner of Episode 169, way back when.
I've taken 10 Metanet 0ths. 6 of them lasted <2 days. I don't have any of them anymore. >:(
Third Place in BLUR 4 highscore.
Not highscoring anymore until v2.

I play for my school team, but that's it. We recently made the British Schools Semi-Final, but we ended up 4th as we didn't have our board 1 or board 3. And I know what you mean about the chess clock, I lost one of my games there on time when I had 2 rooks against rook and knight in a very tense 3 hour 59 minute game (he had one minute left as well ;_;)

Guys, please, for the sake of my participating, let the tournament be after 12th August. Please...

I just registered on Chess.com (you do it too). On the site there is -make a tournament- option. I'll open it when it's needed.

And please, after 12th August.

Not much of a feat considering it's a solved game.

I have a bcf grade of about 80 (which due to the new grading system will be pushed up to about 135).
Someone in my year has a bcf grade of 180+, he's one of the top 5 under 16s in Britain. I think his FIDE is about 2150 but I'm not sure...
I don't know what rating system they employ in other countries (other than FIDE), so I don't know how this would compare.
