:: [ BLUR ] :: [ SEASON 3] ::

Image

Welcome to Season 3, which comes with the blessing of both kkstrong and Hendor!
Please make sure you read all of this post, as there is a lot of new stuff since last time ;)

When you look at a map, do you see places where a corner jump might save valuable seconds? Do you see enemies that you might just be able to squeeze past? Do you see doors that do not need to be opened? If you do, that's good. However, perhaps the best question is: Do you have the skills to play the way you see?

Think you’re a good player? Prove you’re a great one.

::New Stuff

I’ve hijacked the format of the first two seasons and expanded upon it; there will now be four, separate, simultaneous competitions:
  • Speed – Amateur
    Speed – Pro
    Highscore – Amateur
    Highscore – Pro
Although it should be fairly obvious, in the two speed events you should be aiming for quick completions, whereas in the two highscoring competitions you should be aiming to achieve the highest score you can manage.
Similarly, the “Pro” event will be contested by the best players, whilst the participants in the “Amateur” event will be people who aren’t regular highscorers but nevertheless wish to compete.

All four competitions will be played out on the same map each round.

When joining, you should state whether you intend to do both the speedrun and highscore events, or just one, and whether you consider yourself a “pro” or an “amateur”. Although I should be able to judge which event to put you in, it would be helpful if you can evaluate your skills to make my task much easier. Obviously, if you’re not that good a player, it would be stupid to volunteer for the pro event, and vice versa.

:: The Groups

The first stage of this competition will be played in groups of 4; therefore, our total number of players should be a multiple of 4 (although I can rearrange it if this doesn’t work out). Once we have a good number of people to play, groups will be randomly allocated. I will not be playing, although vankusss, who will be helping me run this from behind the scenes, will be competing.

:: The Format

In the first round, the first group stage, you will play three maps. Everyone in every group plays the same map at the same time. Each group does not have their own map. This means that speedruns and highscores will be submitted on the same map. Both the “Pros” and the “Amateurs” will also compete on the same map.

Based on your performance, you will be given points. The fastest player in each group will get most points, while the slowest person will get least.

After playing through the three maps, the player in each group with the most points will advance to the next stage. The four next people with the highest scores will advance as well.

:: The Scoring

1st in group - 4 points
2nd in group - 3 points
3rd in group - 2 points
4th in group - 1 point
To get points, you must submit a demo. If you do not submit a demo, you lose a point. All you need to do to secure yourself at least one point is to submit a demo.

Too boring so far? Well, tough.

Ehehe, not really; there will, of course, be bonus points!

The Golden Player - The single player who submits the best score/fastest time in each event will get + 1 point. This player will accumulate 5 points on the round (4 + 1). In the event of a tied first place, all tied players will get the bonus point.

:: Rules

-You will always have a minimum of one week to complete your demo. This should be way more than enough.
-Submit your demos using Nreality. If you don’t have Nreality, why not? you can download it here
-The maps will be chosen by me from NUMA. Please do not post the demo you are submitting on the map's page before the contest is over.
-Do not PM me your demo.
-You can discuss the competition in this thread or in #n-highscores, although do not show other people your innovations or reveal tricks that they may have missed until after that particular map has been finished with.

:: About Nreality

I will resubmit all maps used in this competition to NUMA in order to enable a "protectedcontest" feature. This will mean that you will be able to see the frame count/score of other people’s demos, but not the actual demo itself. You will be able to view your own demos throughout the competition. You may submit as many demos as you want, whenever you want within the allotted time period for a round.

To use Nreality (skip the first two steps if you already have Nreality downloaded):

1 - Download the program using the above link and unzip the contents to a folder somewhere on your computer.
2 - Open the program from this folder. If you move the program out of the folder, you will lose some features.
3 – Choose “configure” from the main menu. Make sure you choose the right mode you want to submit your demo in (either speedrun or highscore). If you record a demo in the wrong mode and not realise, you will most likely finish last in your group. Thus, it is very important you record your demo(s) in the right mode.
4 - Click "userlevels" from the main menu.
5 - Enter the map number as given in the NUMA web address.
6 - Press "Load Map" and the program will automatically download the map from NUMA. Neat, huh?
7 - Click on the downloaded map just as in the old userlevels to play it.
8 - Any personal best will be recorded to the right of the map title.
9 - To submit your demo, ctrl-click it. (command-click it for Macs.)

Round 1

Map: Sin with Me (by Tempus_Fugit)
ID: 182345

Server Time: 23:59, October 12th
US/Central (GMT -5) : Sunday, October 11th, 11:59
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +0) : Sunday, October 11th 16:59
Melbourne Time (GMT +11) : Sunday, October 12th 03:59

Any demos submitted after these times will earn the 0 points for the round, regardless of time. If you had a demo previously submitted, that will be counted instead.

Round 1 Results

After a long week of complaints, withdrawals and great demos, Round 1 finally drew to a close.

In the Amateur Speed event, Tunco dominated for most of the week. Unfortunately for him, Inspired nabbed a seven frame faster demo to claim fastest in this event – well done to both of them!

In the Pro Speed event, Etz and vankusss contested 0th at the start before TFK swooped in to take 0th, with AMLT taking 1st. Despite Etz re-taking 0th, it took Meta just two hours to be the only person to go under 600 and take 0th, using an innovation first discovered by romaniac in the hs competition. Well done to everyone here!

The Highscore amateur competition saw Etz take top spot, with Brianlyao not far behind. Credit to both of those, and to numa_ninja and AMLT, who also did well.

The Pro Highscoring event was arguably the most interesting. Vankusss was the first to break 199, and looked comfortable until Seifer appeared, taking 0th by around half a second with an innovation first made by romaniac. Xaelar was next to take 0th, just two frames away from breaking 200. Then, out of nowhere almost, glib_jase seized 0th with a 200+ run. Seifer upped his time to 200.775, but glib_jase again improved his run to put 0th beyond doubt. A late improvement from Romaniac saw him take 2nd and be one of three people to break 200. Congratulations to all of those people!

The top three demos for speed and hs are on page 6 of this thread.

Round 2

Map: Bubbel Now (by lord_day and atob)

Server Time: 23:59, October 19th

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +0) : Sunday, October 18th 16:59
Melbourne Time (GMT +11) : Sunday, October 19th 03:59

Any demos submitted after these times will earn the 0 points for the round, regardless of time. If you had a demo previously submitted, that will be counted instead.

Round 2 Results

In the amateur speed event, only 5 people managed to get on the nreality table: in ascending order of score, they were bobaganuesh_2, ChrisE, Jawbit, Inspired and bhz, who had 0th. Congrats to everyone there!

There were a huge variety of routes used in this event; at one point, there were 8 different routes used in the top ten. Anyway, two people dominated over the course of the week: OutrightOJ in the first half, and kool-aid, who secured the best speed demo of the round, in the second. TRO also made a great demo towards the end of the week. Vankusss and Izzy complete the list of people who achieved sub-300; congratulations to all of them!

ChrisE started well in the amateur highscore competition, only to be thwarted by almost two and a half seconds by allen_y, who was incidentally the only amateur to score over 153; bobaganuesh_2 also overtook ChrisE by a single frame in the middle of the week. Well done to the three of them, and to amomentlikethis and jawbit who also made it onto the nreality table.

Vankusss again held 0th at first, only for it to be stolen by first glib_jase, then Xaelar and finally Seifer, who firmly held 0th for the rest of the week. Van managed to improve to 1st, overtaking TFK and Etz who had also secured good demos. Romaniac also broke 153 late on, but had to settle for 6th. Congratulations to all of them!

The top three demos for speed and hs will be posted on page 7 of this thread.

The next map will be up later today.

Round 3

Map: Stratevasion by tktktk
ID: 183662

Server Time: 23:59, October 26th
US/Central (GMT -5) : Sunday, October 25th, 11:59
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +0) : Sunday, October 25th 16:59
Melbourne Time (GMT +11) : Sunday, October 26th 03:59

Any demos submitted after these times will earn the 0 points for the round, regardless of time. If you had a demo previously submitted, that will be counted instead.

Round 3 Results

The final round of the group stages was a pretty steady round; one person dominated both the speedrun and highscore tables for practically the whole round, as we shall see.

In amateur speed, ChrisE took the lead early on and didn’t lose it for the whole week; he was also the only amateur to get sub-400. Bhz steadily improved to 2nd over the course of the week, with Unreality taking third. Well done to all of them!

Pro speed was a similar story, only with ToeFaceKiller in ChrisE’s place: he held onto 0th for the whole week, and even steadily improved his run to boot. At one point AMLT, who finished 1st, was within three frames of him, before he pulled away to a 6 frame lead. Izzy held 2nd for most of the week until a late demo from Meta; vankusss also improved to sub-370. Xaelar’s demo was late and thus cannot be accepted. His previous highscore will be accepted in its place, meaning he will still receive some points.

Very few people actually subbed demos in the amateur hs event; allen_y was the eventual winner; him and bobaganuesh_2 were the only people in the amateur section to break 124. Jawbit, in third, just got over 123. Well done to those three!

There was a bit of controversy in the pro highscore event this week: TFK again led for practically the whole week, with Izzy in 1st. Demos from Golfkid, Romaniac and Seifer all scored very highly late on. Unfortunately, Xaelar’s 0th demo was too late, being submitted after the deadline, and thus will not be accepted. His previous submission will be accepted instead.

Quarter Final Pairings

The Quarter Finals use a knockout format, meaning you are paired against someone else. Your aim is to beat them and only them; the other players will be irrelevant as far as you are concerned. The round will be contested over two legs; you must submit demos on both maps to stand a chance of going through (unless your opponent also fails to submit demos on both maps, which is unlikely).

I'm in. I'd like to say amateur but I really don't know... I'm not exactly up to xaelar's standards, but I'm not exactly bad at N.
I don't know, put me where you think I should be.

I'll take both speed and highscore.

Life247 - #n-highscores: Grrr, you're too perfect Meta.
Pryocheese - this map: of course you'd figure out how to cheat anti-cheat methods
Kablizzy: Click
kkstrong: I fully expect him to sig that.

I'll sign up under ametuer speedruns. If you feel I'm to good, which is unlikely, move me to pro.

Finally! A non-mapping contest!

I am tentatively in (depending on time available) as a pro highscore and speedrun.
[16:24] <@golfkid> I'm pretty sure I will literally scream if I die on the last column of 78-4 at this point
[16:25] <trance> Oh, yeah. That level.
[16:29] <@golfkid> lol
[16:30] <@golfkid> It looks so simple
[16:30] <@golfkid> But it says "NO! I will rape your sanity!"

I'm in...after looking at the list of pros, I've decided to be an amateur for HS and SR.

When's it start?

Sound's great! Only thing I'm iffy about is the pro/amateur thing, I just the worst of the worst should not advance. Also giving a chance for other to compete with the "pro" status.

As well as many maps can be maxed, therefore everyone may get the same demo.

Thankfully you've given us 1 week intervals, so I can definately sqeeze 30 min-1 hour to max that map (yes speed, never really fond of highscoring, makes me want to kill something).

So I'm definately in, if ever I find I cannot compete, I will pm you.

Jawbit: The competition will start when a substantial number of people have joined for each category. (Hopefully sometime next week).

Karmapolice: I'll be choosing the maps, and the ones I choose should not be easily maxable.

alright, I guess put me under speed pro if I have no choice.

Nice idea, although it's quite obvious to make a speeding competition, someone had to take credit right? ;] Lol can't wait to get this started, the best of the best competing, will be exciting, hopefully no more kool-aid/meta's will join. It'd be hell if mr_kim, kryx and darkshadow joined
